Mexican Makes NY Times Investment No American Will Do

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 39 Comments

(2008-09-11) — Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim HelĂş has stepped up to do a job that most American’s are no longer willing to do, buying a 6.4 percent stake in The New York Times Co., the newspaper which has struggled for several years with declining readership, ad revenue and stock price.

Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. , expressed his gratitude to the Mexican mogul, adding that the Bush administration should take steps to make it easier for foreigners to do everything from picking lettuce and mowing lawns, to installing roofing and rescuing mainstream media companies.

Mr. Sulzberger said he doesn’t expect the new shareholder to push for any major changes in news content, other than translating each story into “America’s second native tongue”.

Let’s see if Helú’s interested in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Oh, and that bridge in Brooklyn.

You know this is a perfect oppurtunity to show support for Global Warming. Stop the presses and save a forest.

SCOTT! Back away from the coffeepot!

Ms. Rightwing, May I humbly say I don’t think it is possible to overwhelm the Vast Scrappleface Prayer Network. It’s just too powerful! Your request is my privilege-prayers going up for you and Mr. Rags.

  • 5 upnorthlurkin // Sep 11, 2008 at 12:24 pm

Maggie, I concur! I watched President Bush at the Pentagon….I only wish the announcers would’ve shut up so I could’ve heard the military choir singing! The bells ringing at ground zero and Shanksville, PA (sp) got the tears running too.

Mr. Slim is making a mistake. His Mexican companies are making a profit on the money the illegal immigrants send back home. Why is he buying a dying American newspaper read by fewer and fewer Americans who are getting poorer every day paying to support the illegals? Maybe Slim’s American constituents are calling for a Hispanic section in the NY Times?

wv = sadness system — I’m pretty sad about the system…

  • 7 da Bunny // Sep 11, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Wow…nothing like throwing good money after bad. Maybe he’s trying to provide illegal alien writers with the journalism jobs Americans won’t do.

MsRW, God be with you as you await the results of your biopsy, and as you care for your beloved kitty. Prayers going up…

Ms. RW, they’re going up from here as well.

It would probably make more sense!

Ms RW, GOD is hearing my prayer for you, as well as MANY others here!

Is the NY Times a non- profit org?

  • 13 Fred Sinclair // Sep 11, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Same for me MRW.I - I’m praying everything turns out to be O.K.

I went to see a Urologist today. Am set for CT scan Sat. 10 AM to check for cancer due to “suspect cancer cells” in my latest urinalysis.

I’m not overly concerned but would appreciate intervention on my behalf by the Vast Scrappleface Prayer Network (thanks MargeinMI for that) - with the aneurism on my Aorta for several years now, I realize that like the old family car (’48 Hudson ‘Hornet’) this vehicle I call a body is winding down.

I’ve had my “three score and ten” so whether it’s tonight or after I get my pic on the Smucker’s Jar (post Nov. 12, 2037) either way - to be out of this vehicle is to be present with God. (I’m in no hurry to speed up the journey though.)

I’ve been reading about asparagus and cancer and will give it a go - I love asparagus anyway. From what I’ve read; cooked and put through a blender people have walked away cancer free.

Anybody want to e-mail me for a copy of the latest homeopathic report on “Asparagus and Diet Soda”?
heirborn_ranger@sbcglobal.net - I’ll be happy to send it.

Well then, I wish Señor Helú buena suerte with the deal.

OK, not really; I want to see the NYT go down in flames! ;-)

  • 16 mindknumbed kid // Sep 11, 2008 at 6:17 pm

May all the inhabitants of the 57 united states never forget that day. As we face a world that is deemed “no safer” let us remember the forces of evil that rejoiced that day, and the forces that are working to limit our ability to rid us of the threat from jihadists throughout the world. May all American citizens learn to distinguish resolve to protect our land from rhetoric designed to empower select individuals to high office(s). And may we as good citizens endeavor to live as an holy people that may be blessed with protective hand of an holy God.

  • 17 Darthmeister // Sep 11, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Given how the NYT is tanking, it would make more sense for the NYT board to simply pay Señor Helú to take it off their hands.

camojack has it right … good luck, sir, y vaya con Dios!

R.A.M. News Service EXCLUSIVE:Today, after Senator’s “Chuckie” Schumer and Bob Casey redefined Recession as, “what we are in right now, caused by Bushie and the Evil Republican administration”, the N.Y.Times partnered with them to publish a new dictionary, (since they ALL agreed they were ALL smarter than Daniel Webster, and besides he was probably a Republican anyway)!
Along with the new definition of Recession, it will change, “Change” to: What ONLY Barack (”The ONE” O’Bama) can do to/for America! A few new words like, “Neo-Con” is defined as, “A knuckle dragging Christian Conservative, who clings to religion and guns!” “Typical White Person” as: “ANY white person, but particularly those living in a trailor park”. (Does NOT include Democrats or Liberals) And the best one: “Right wing nut-job”, as “A right wing nut-job” or “ANY Republican”!The dictionary/non fiction book is expected to outsell Nancy Pelosi’s lastest tome. Film at 11 EST.

The dictionary will be printed in English and Spanish.

So, Taxin’ Jenny is coaching OBitten for the upcoming debate? Wonder who all refused before they settled on her? I keep thinking that this Obomba campaign is going to go the way of the infamous Homer Stokes campaign. It certainly has the potential, but the hard left is so overcome with BDS that they are incapable of recognizing an empty suit candidate that could actually be evil from all we can discern about him. No matter what evidence we cite here that shows the lies of the left, they willingly ignore it rather than give up the charge for their questionable “messiah”. They aren’t trusting in Obrahma (that’s a lot of bull!), but are filled with the hope that he is “not Bush”. The hate crowd rejoices in the low approval numbers of Bush, but after all of the misinformation and besmirching the LSM has been constantly spewing for the last 7 years it is not surprising to anyone with the capability of rational thought and the ability to use Mr. Gore’s nifty invention to find truth.
The “itching ears” of the left are ignorantly following after the god of this world, licking up everything that he puts in their cups. Just like in those old westerns it ultimately comes down to the guy in the white hat vs. the guy in the black hat. ‘Cept the guys in the black hat figured out a while ago that if you are ever going to fool anyone you gotta quit wearing hats.

    I love Ann:
“Despite the fact that Hitler brought “change,” promoted clean, energy-efficient mass transit by making the trains run on time, supported abortion for the non-master races, vastly expanded the power of the national government and was uniformly adored by college students and their professors, I gather that liberals don’t like Hitler because they’re constantly comparing him to Bush.”

mig re#23 (8:42PM) Amazing how a little ignorance goes so far, isn’t it? Change is an unreliable vehicle much of the time. I would say that at least 80% of the people talking about “change” mean no evil Bush-like republicans. Their brains can’t function beyond that idea.

    Off track again…
The Palin haters have officially gone insane. Donna Brazile and Steve Cohen (D, somewhere) have both stated that, “Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.” Gosh, I wonder what their point was?

I think those who are politically correct are actually unmannered. We were taught to speak the truth. Politically correct people do not. Rather, they do their best to attack people who do speak truth. To me that just seems rude, unmannered, and frankly insulting.

Perhaps they did not see the towers fall. Perhaps they choose not to accept that people outside of this country want to see them die or be enslaved. Perhaps they fail to recognize that ignoring the storms will not make them go away. Then the towers fall, planes crash, hurricanes come ashore, levies break, and the politically correct first seek to blame others for the calamity before taking action to address the issues.

9/11/2001 should have been all the wake up call any rational person would need. But then again, trolls are not rational.

Democrats on Capitol Hill fear Obama fallout

Here’s hoping their worst nightmares come true. But if Americans are as stupid as Democrats think them to be, Obamessiah might actually pull it off with the aid of the liberal media. As we’ve seen the last seven Bush-hating years, never underestimate the power of a good media lie. But if there is any justice left in the world, the Donks should go down in flaming defeat for their seditious lies and trying to fob off an inexperienced, unaccomplishing lying opportunitist on the American people for President.

Pam Anderson tells Palin to “suck it.”
Another Hollyweird liberal twit speaking from experience, I guess. Is it the dyed blonde hair that makes her so stupid or does it come natural to Pamela?

Biden living up to his gaffe-prone reputation

Ahh, but that’s what makes him so endearing to most brain-dead liberals.

Putin: I like Bush but hate everyone else around him

Hmmmm, at least Putin the communist is a little more open-minded than American liberal communists.

Political correctness is a dodge — remember Obama’s “Sweetie” comment and Joe Biden … Oh, my, Joe Biden — he’s neither politically nor grammatically correct, and as often as not he’s doesn’t even make it to plain-old correct, as this story points out.

If George W. Bush made half the verbal slips Joe does, the left would be calling him stupid. When Joe does it, though, his keepers say “that Biden’s occasional stumbles prove to voters that he is human and that they help them relate to the candidate.”

UPDATE: This is almost beyond belief. The Associated Press, which is increasingly indistinguishable from the DNC, headlines:

“Palin tries to defend qualifications in interview.” The AP’s absurd account begins: ‘John McCain running mate Sarah Palin sought Thursday to defend her qualifications but struggled with foreign policy, unable to describe President Bush’s doctrine of pre-emptive strikes against threatening nations and acknowledging she’s never met a foreign head of state.’

I watched the video of Charlie Gibson’s interview with Governor Sarah Palin and was immediately reminded of this little story.

Dan Rather, Katie Couric, and a tough Marine Sergeant were all captured by terrorists in Iraq. The leader of the terrorists told them that he would grant them each one last request before they were beheaded
Dan Rather said, “Well, I’m a Texan; so I’d like one last bowlful of hot spicy chili.” The leader nodded to an underling who left and returned with the chili. Rather ate it all and said, “Now I can die content.”
Katie Couric said, “I’m a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what’s about to happen. Maybe someday someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end.” The leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder and Couric dictated some comments. She then said, “Now I can die happy.”
The leader turned and said, “And now, Mr. Marine tough guy, what is your final wish?”
“Kick me in the [backside],” said the Marine.
“What?” asked the leader? “Will you mock us in your last hour?”
“No, I’m not kidding. I want you to kick me in the [backside],” insisted the Sergeant.
So the leader shoved him into the open, and kicked him in the [backside].
The Marine went sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9 mm pistol from under his flack jacket, and shot the leader dead. In the resulting confusion, he jumped to his knapsack, pulled out his M4 carbine and sprayed the Iraqis with gunfire. In a flash, all the Iraqis were either dead or fleeing for their lives.
As the Sergeant was untying Rather and Couric, they asked him, “Why didn’t you just shoot them in the beginning? Why did you ask them to kick you in the [backside] first?”
What,” replied the Marine, “and have you two [fruitcakes] report that I was the aggressor?

AP’s politically convoluted twisting of the Charlie Gibson interview is easily on an analogous par with the Marine’s final comment.

This story gives truth to the adage that a fool and his money are soon parted.

OT - I watched O’Reilly interview Obama, which will be replayed this Sunday evening for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet but might like to, and then I watched some of last night’s snooze fest at that silly forum. Does anyone know where there are side-by-side shots of Obama’s hair at these two events?

I was reacquainting myself with an old H. Beam Piper story (“Last Enemy”) and ran across the following prescient description:

“… the arrogant, cocksure, ambitious, leftist politician, who knows what is best for everybody better than anybody else does, and who is convinced that he is inescapably right and that whoever differs with him is not only an ignoramus but a venal scoundrel as well.”
