(2008-08-04) — Democrat presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, just hours after accusing his fellow citizens of being addicted to oil, admitted he has suffered the same condition since his teenage years.
“I confess that I frequently abused petroleum-based products,” said the contrite candidate, recalling that even at age 16 he sometimes drained 75 liters of a refined form of the controlled substance in a single week.
“Even now, I struggle, and it’s one day at a time,” said Sen. Obama, noting that “during a recent overseas jet fuel binge, thousands of dollars of the stuff just went up in smoke. I was seeing those trails, dude, and I thought, ‘That ain’t right. Barry you need help’.”
Unveiling his new energy proposal today in Michigan, Sen. Obama said when he’s president, generous coverage for victims of oil addiction will be part of his universal health care program. He added that he plans to set an example by checking himself into a 30-day public transit program for treatment.
“We can’t drill our way out of this crisis,” he said. “The first step is to admit you have a problem that you’re helpless to solve, and that you need to turn your life over to the care of a higher power who can pass legislation and levy taxes.”

Unfortunately, it appears that Obama does not understand how to work the program. Getting off of one addiction doesn’t mean that you transfer your behavior to another addiction!!

From the link I gave above:
During the 2004 elections, people who were unaware of my political inclinations announced in front of me that “Bush is the worst President ever,” “Republicans are stupid,” “Republicans are evil,” “Bush is stupid,” “Republicans are corrupt,” “Republicans are fascists” and “Bush should be impeached.” Children ran up to me on the sidewalk chanting “Bush is evil, Bush is evil” - so you know what their parents were saying at the dinner table.
… Barring their monomaniacal animosity towards Bush and the Republicans, they’re otherwise very nice: they’re hard workers, loving parents, good neighbors and helpful and reliable friends. Being the social creature that I am, I don’t want with one word (”Republican”) to turn these friendships upside down and inside out. (I’m not the only one with this problem.) I don’t want to be on the receiving end of some hideous Jekyll to Hyde transformation, so I just keep my mouth shut.
Those people I know who have spoken aloud their new conservative political views have been horrified by the animosity turned against them by formerly friendly neighbors and colleagues. My in-laws who are, like me, 9/11 neocons (down in Los Angeles) have stared open-mouthed at colleagues who use staff meetings to revile Bush and the Republicans - all to the cheers and huzzahs of the other staff members. (Indeed, what they describe sounds remarkably like Orwell’s Two Minutes Hate.) On the occasions when they’ve suggested that maybe, just maybe, Bush isn’t the Antichrist, they’ve found themselves shunned by these same colleagues.
I guess ET must be one of Bookworm’s
Goldwater conservativeleft-wing acquaintances.I find it interesting that supposedly liberal, open-minded, and understanding parents would actually propagandize their own children to hate POTUS, conservatives or anyone who votes Republican from time to time. Pretty pathetic people … and hypocrites, too. Yep, it’s people like that who deceive themselves into thinking they can inculcate their children with such mindless hate and drivel and thus usher in “world peace” in their lifetimes.
Maybe the blame-America Bush-haters will start start slapping those Hating My Way to World Peace stickers on their hybrid’s bumper in a fit of honesty and patriotic pride.

Darth,
I’m also one whose ‘political inclinations’ often go unnanounced. Living in a blue state as I do, I am surrounded by liberal co-workers, friends and even family members who rant about “Bush is the worst president ever”, etc.
At a recent family get-together I interrupted the Bush-bashing momentarily to state that I thought history would be kinder to GWB than they are. The room got quiet for a moment as people thought about that, but it didn’t last long.
One in-law said Bush was the worst president since Truman. (Hmmm) OK. So I asked him who he thought was a ‘good’ president. Oddly enough, expecting him to say Bill Clinton he said, “I kinda liked Reagan.” Go figure…

I got out my membership card that I have held all these years (and I’m old) and evidently, at a day old, I signed and pledged that I would not allow demon alcohol or tobacco to touch my lips. I am wondering if that includes allowing petroleum products to touch my car and body?

I wonder if he is only wearing cotton or wool, if he is using nothing but paper, wood, glass or metal products and if he is driving an electric car. Selected Quotes of Barry Goldwater, “Mr. Conservativeâ€
“I don’t have any respect for the Religious Right. There is no place in this country for practicing religion in politics. That goes for Falwell, Robertson and all the rest of these political preachers. They are a detriment to the country.”
“A lot of so-called conservatives don’t know what the word means. They think I’ve turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That’s a decision that’s up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the Religious Right.”
“By maintaining the separation of church and state, the United States has avoided the intolerance which has so divided the rest of the world with religious wars . . . Can any of us refute the wisdom of Madison and the other framers? Can anyone look at the carnage in Iran, the bloodshed in Northern Ireland, or the bombs bursting in Lebanon and yet question the dangers of injecting religious issues into the affairs of state?”
“The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others, unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives. . . We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we mustn’t stop now”.
“To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.”

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to Grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
All presidential power MUST flow from The United States Constitution to be “conservative”!
The president can never be the “Commander in Chief” of a FREE PEOPLE, apart from their military; and at that, subject to the oversight of Congress, and possible impeachment for the misuse that military.

There has not been a leader in the White House other than Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan since Theodore Roosevelt’s “Square Deal”.
Three leaders in over a century? I’m believing that after McCain is elected he will, against all odds, be like Truman and knock the socks off of everyone by becoming the most hated President (by liberals) in all of history. Like Truman, even his fellow democrats hated him (mainly because they couldn’t “control” him).
For the welfare of the USofA Truman may well be the best President America has ever had. (even though he was far from perfect.) Truman rejected the council of Generals White, Scott, Twining and LeMay in their unanimous urging to end the Korean War in three days with zero loss of American lives by using the Atomic Bomb. BIG MISTAKE. BIG, HUGE!
McCain is far from my 1st choice, but I sense a “sleeping tiger”.
My 1st choice would be either Sen. Jim Inhofe (R) Okla. Alaska’s Gov. Sarah Palin or Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal. Any of the three would be great for America as would any of the three be great as Vice-President.
If McCain isn’t elected then his defeat will be at the feet of those Republicans who stayed home and didn’t vote. With all of his warts and scars he is (a) Pro military in the war against terrorism and (b) committed to nominating only Conservatives to fill vacancies on the SCOTUS.
Other than that he’s a liberal but then for America B.O. would be a disaster!!!!!!! Somewhat akin to God’s putting His “Chosen People” into slavery for four hundred years in Egypt.
Not that we don’t deserve it but I pray for God’s continued mercy for America.

Just returned from voting. Pete Hockstra as Rep. - the rest are local offices.
12 states and possessions have only one (1) Representative. California has a few gazillions (54 actually). I just read an article promoting a readjustment Amendment to the Constitution limiting all states to one (1) Representative. Period.
Although a very good case is made for such an excellent amendment - omitted was a plan to get such an amendment through congress. I see a fly in the ointment since no consideration was given on how to convince congress to vote themselves out of a job.
For no good reason I had not previously scrolled down past the “submit” button.
I just did and found this:

9602 access attempts !!!It would be nice if we could apply that very effective blocking mechanism to our Senate and House of Representatives. That would effectively make the proposed amendment unnecessary. about two dozed Rep.’s would be easier to control.
Those that make the cut could find their new responsibilities made more attractive by taking the combined salaries of the fired Rep.’s and awarding equal distribution to the remaining Rep.’s.
It’ll never fly, but it’s fun to think about.

masochism |ˈmasəˌkizəm; ˈmaz-|
noun
the tendency to derive pleasure, esp. sexual gratification, from one’s own pain or humiliation.
• (in general use) the enjoyment of what appears to be painful.>
Maybe we should charge him for his pleasure. He can use PayPal and send Scott $25.00 every time one of us beats him up (in writing, that is.)
On the other hand, we could make him quit ‘cold turkey’ by only writing nice things about him, compliment him on how handsome he is; what a real ‘Macho’ man he is; how we love his writing that reads like words flowing straight from the “Bard’s” pen. If it should respond to what I’ve written to you be sure and let me know. Since I went “on the wagon” (the troll wagon that is.) I’m very careful to never read anything written by them.
