Congress to Halt Closing of Unprofitable Starbucks

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 59 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2008-07-02) — Democrats in Congress today plan to introduce a bill to halt the recently-announced closing of some 600 Starbucks coffee stores, noting that the displacement of 12,000 Starbucks baristas would overwhelm government aid offices not prepared to handle so many clients for whom English is a second language.

Baristas, those who serve Starbucks beverages, speak a peculiar dialect that combines pseudo-Italian and American slang with inflections borrowed from ancient hemp-smoking cultures.

“These people can’t just walk out of Starbucks and get a job at a grocery store or a factory,” said House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA. “They would need ESL classes and cultural training to learn how to relate to ordinary Americans and function in society.”

Rep. Pelosi’s bill would subsidize the 600 money-losing Starbucks locations by giving away millions of taxpayer dollars in so-called ‘Venti Vouchers’ to residents of these hard-hit neighborhoods. If the effort fails to revive the flagging stores, Rep. Pelosi said Democrats would “seriously consider nationalizing the coffee industry to ensure the free flow of java at fair prices.”

“This is just another one of our heroic Democrat efforts to protect Americans from the impact of the Bush economic policies,” said Rep. Pelosi. “Under this president, America has become a cold and desolate place where corporations cut unprofitable activities to focus on increasing the bottom line, and returning value to shareholders. When Democrats retake the White House next year, we will reverse that trend.”

The majority of Congresscritters have never had coffee that wasn’t served in fine china with a silver spoon and thinks “Starbucks” is the appropriations bill for space-based weapons systems.

Out of the blue Scott! Who else but you? So very true. On a “real” newspaper, this would be on the front page.

So very, very adapted to reality. Given the political slant of most of Starbuck’s customers. This downturn represents a real loss to the left. I can only hope it’s a precursor to the coming election.

    Scott,

You’re just in a “froth” because you have to drive 5-1/2 miles to your satellite office in Macungie. Besides, Real American baristas work at Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s aonly a few blocks farther away, dude. And if you become a regular maybe they’ll get wi-fi.

It is ironic to wake up to your post Scott, since last night as I was listening to late night talk show (Rusty Humphrey ) throwing the failing Strabucks issue out to the airwaves, I considered the re-employement issue through my mind.

When I lived in California Starbucks was as normal as a forest fire so I spent a lot of time running in and out of the joints. The girls who worked there had little chance of getting a job in the mainstream work-a-day force since most carried enough hardware on their face to set off a metal detector at 40 yards.

Unless we bring back the circus as an everyday part of our American way we must keep Starbucks alive or there will be little we can do to re-employ our youth, though the kids who worked in Starbucks back in my California days would have to be around 30 or better by now.

Hmm, old Starbuckies, sitting in the corner shaking from caffine withdrawl, metalic poisoning and cultral shock from paying $4.95 a gallon to go the the pysche to get coping pills. Tsk, tsk

  • 18 conserve-a-tip // Jul 2, 2008 at 10:15 am

OK, sort of off topic, but seeing as how Frasier’s little Nirvosa coffee house is a take-off on Starbucks, I was watching an episode of Frasier last night (yes, that is my nightly addiction) and I caught a most interesting thing. Last night’s episode was from February 27, 1996 and was entitled, “Look Before You Leap”. At one point, Frasier walks in, after a brisk and early walk with Eddie, and comments on the beautiful day - it being February in Seattle and a warm 80 degrees - and says that it just makes one realize who created such a magnificent day and he opens the doors to his balcony overlooking the city. His dad, Marty, shuts the doors in his usual crochety way and says, “Yeah! THANK YOU Global Warming.”

I just laughed out loud. 12 years ago and they were freaking out over it then. And what did Congress do? Or President Clinton or ANYBODY? Zip - Zero - Nada…that is until Algore figured out how to make money on it. Sheesh.

Starbucks = “Charbucks”…over-roasted beans give the coffee a “burnt” taste that I’ve never found all that appealing.

Here in SoCal, Starbucks is on every corner or in every strip mall, along with being in the local grocery stores and malls. They have seriously over-saturated the market, and it’s no surprise that they now need to “downsize.” I prefer the coffee of another chain, “The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.” It’s not quite as expensive and tastes MUCH better…although I don’t buy coffee out very often, drinking what I make for myself and my husband each morning, instead.

WoW!! Just had some fun (fun is where you either find it or make it) I actually got (unwittingly onto “TalkLeft”, Identified myself as a Christian Constitutionalist, 70 years old - when I registered. Their topic was in praise of gore’s recent “Nobel Peace Prize” Most of the comments were typically left wing so I posted:

“I have prayed to God that He will allow me to live long enough to witness algore being led away in handcuffs to begin serving his lifetime sentence in prison for his “Manmade” Global warming Hoax
The trillions of dollars involved on the newly mandated CFL’s (100% of which are manufactured in China) is part of his scheme to become the planet’s first trillionaire. Every traffic light contains 16 bulbs, add in all the nation’s auto headlights, turn signal bulbs, dome lights, etc. @ $3.50 per bulb - China’s getting richer and richer while America supplies most of their wealth.

I hope that lifetime sentence is “Without Possibility of Parole”

Of course his phony “Oscar” and “Nobel” will have to be deleted.”

Beekabok2: Yes, I remember your ordeal and I am so thrilled that God has given you a person with whom to spend your life and share your memories. Congratulations! Just had a wedding here in our house two weekends ago.

Back on the subject of Scott’s tribute to Congress, I might add that I think that Congress should extend the bailout to those poor people who can’t afford to buy Starbucks coffee anymore, period. Just subsidize the price of a cup of coffee when the vouchers run out!! For every cup of coffee, give Starbucks $2 on the agreement that they lower the price of a cup of coffee to $2. Then raise the income tax rates on the top 50% of American income earners to offset the cost to the treasury. Then, because of the higher taxes, when the businesses start laying off, sending out people who can’t even afford to pay for a $2 cup of coffee, subsidize it $3 and etc.

Oh yes, and then when the price craters due to low demand, in order to make sure that we only use coffee grown in America to raise the price, Congress needs to use a set-aside program for coffee and then I can receive money for not growing coffee on my acreage even though I never have and never will grow coffee. Huh? You say they don’t grow coffee in the US? Oh well, just a minor detail. Congress doesn’t pay attention to detail anyway.

And then raise the taxes on the upper 50% of income earners in America to offset the drain on the treasury.

Should I run for Congress as a Democrat? :-)

da Bunny #22 - I drink “coffee out” only at Steak and Shake or Denny’s - I use a 40 cup urn (percolator) a good number of friends (mostly fellow church members) come by daily for coffee. They too have junked their drip machines and have gone back to percolators. (only way to make “egg shell” coffee.)

    coffee in basket
add crushed eggshells (2 for regular pot)
add 2 capfuls of pure vanilla extract add 1 t. ground cinnamon

Some people add cream and/or sugar to cover up the bitter taste from the tars, oils - resins in the coffee bean
eggshells are almost pure calcium and absorb all of the bitterness during the perking.

btw - beekabok2 #23 Congratulations!!! Sounds like The Lord has blessed you wonderfully. Always good to hear good news.

    Obama ‘Birth Certificate’ Photoshopped Fake
    israelinsider reports:

The “birth certificate” claimed by the Barack Obama campaign is not certified as authentic and appears to be a photoshopped fake.

The image, purporting to come from the Hawaii Department of Health, has been the subject of intense skepticism in the blogosphere in the past two weeks. But now the senior spokesman of that Department has confirmed to Israel Insider what are the required features of a certified birth document — features that Obama’s purported “birth certificate” clearly lack.

The image became increasingly suspect with Israel Insider’s revelation that variations of the certificate image were posted on the Photobucket image aggregation website — including one listing the location of Obama’s birth as Antarctica, one with the certificate supposedly issued by the government of North Korea, and another including a purported photo of baby Barack — one of which has a “photo taken” time-stamp just two minutes before the article and accompanying image was posted on the left-wing Daily Kos blog.

Bill himself said, “if you elect me, you get her too”, what would make us think that it would be any different with electing her? Even Bill himself when out campaigning for his wife couldn’t keep himself from speaking about himself in the first person. The interesting thing is how many prominent dems had the gall to come out against them. There was a time that none dared do such a thing…times change, and now Bill isn’t king nor is Hillary queen. They have been “slapped down” publicly, it is a new era. If you can’t see that, you just don’t “get it”.
