‘Microsoft-Yahoo Merger’ Tops Google Search List

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 26 Comments

(2008-05-03) — The potential takeover of Yahoo by Microsoft Corp. became such a big news story over the weekend that the phrase “Microsoft-Yahoo Merger” broke into the top 100 list of most-searched phrases on Google.com.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, in an electronic mail letter to employees of the Sunnyvale, California, search engine firm, said: “With Yahoo’s brains and Microsoft’s cash we’re going to create so much buzz that it will almost be like Apple’s iPhone launch.”

Mr. Ballmer admitted that, “It’s hard to find analogies robust enough to encompass this historic moment — but it’s kind of like if General Motors took over the U.S. Postal Service. It’s a paradigm shift, a sea change. From now on, when you Google ‘innovation’ MS-Yahoo will be number one. We’re going to make the whole technology sector think different…to coin a phrase.”

As far as I can tell, the merger isn’t going to happen, though, and Microsoft is talking hostile takeover. I think Microsoft might get a shock because, personally, I don’t think the shareholders will cooperate.

    *The Yahoo shareholders, that is.

Man’s merger is only man’s merger, there’s only one merger that counts. That’s the merger that takes place when we are grafted into God’s family and become joint heirs, through adoption, with Jesus.

    By the word of the LORD were the heavens made;
and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap:
he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the LORD:
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought:
he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
    Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD;
and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
    Psalm 33:8-12

In a world where money is only numbers on paper; and companies are able, through the magic of Generally-Accepted Accounting Principles” to report grand profits to shareholders while showing monstrous losses to the IRS, I have to plead total ignorance. I guess that’s why I ain’t rich!

    Going ga-ga over at Goo-Google, I see!

    From Bob Owens at PajamaMedia:

Fifty-four shootings in two weekends. Shot-up bodies recovered in groups of three and five. Is this Ramadi? Basra? No.

    Welcome to Chicago.

After a recent outbreak of gun-related violence, Mayor Richard Daley is now pushed into supporting a plan by new Police Superintendent Jody Weis to arm 13,000 Chicago police officers with assault rifles. Depending on how many weapons are eventually deployed, this may develop into the largest militarization of police patrol officers in United States history. If the department arms 10,000 of their officers with M4s, the police will have 9,900 more assault rifles in Chicago than the U.S. Marines presently have in Fallujah, Iraq.

This is what happens when liberal Donks run a city for generations on end … just like in New Orleans, Detroit, Philadelphia, ad nauseam. They promise a velvet-lined cage and deliver only chaos and misery. Stupid liberal neo-Marxists.

It looks like more “obscene profits” in the making that Madame Hillary! will have to grasp…for the greater good, of course. Uh, no, Big Earl is her victime of choice. Thank you.

For crying out loud ,why isn’t the NYT demanding the USA pull out of Chicago. And while the Old Grey Mare is at it she should demand Microsoft pull out of Yahoo.

    RE #5:
This is what happens when weak-willed, yellow-bellied wimps get control of national thinking. Discipline is made out to be a bad thing that must be replaced by “tolerance.”

What we need is not so much attack weapons as attack mentality; attack judges; attack prosecutors; attack juries; kick-A wardens who are tougher than the inmates.

wv: man ringing. Yes! we need more of that.

ola #6 - Do you suppose that HillBilly, Inc. Will put her special tax on obscene profits currently being made by holders of gold and gold futures? up today $3.70 to $855.00

May 1st 2002 I began urging friends to buy gold @ $308.00. As of now that would represent an obscene profit of $547.00 for every ounce they’re holding. I don’t think oil has done as well, but since rumor has it HillBilly, Inc. demanded payment from the ChiComs in gold bullion it may not be pressed as much as obscene profits by “big oil”.

The difference being that the ‘oil profits’ are sitting there to be re-invested in new drilling and new refineries, once the last of the eco-freaks are finally plowed under.

Gold profits are just beginning. When gold tops out @ $1,200.00 it’ll really get obscene.

During his election campaign (if I remember correctly), JFK promised to not allow deregulation of gold—it was $35 per ounce when he was elected. Obviously, a promise he was not able to keep.

    Fred #10:
That $547 profit represents a REALLY obscene profit of 177.6%! How much does Exxon make? 6.5%.
Amazing how ignorance seems to follow politicians around.

MD #10 - Surely they will argue that spread over 6 years, it’s not as obscene as it first appears. - Ha!

When I was in High school, we moved from Marion, Illinois to Long Beach, California (1954). Dad was talking about gold moving up from a regulated price of $35.00 an ounce to $35.25 WoW!!!

If I (If I; If I; If I; Fonly) still had some of those ounces - Whew! An obscene profit of $819.75 in only 54 years!!! But of course, I don’t - hindsight is so bothersomely (and deadly) accurate.

FDR had banned (made illegal) for American Citizens to own gold (Apr 1933) in 1934 gold was officially re-valued from $20.67 to $35.00

For some of the horrors of the day and FDR’s actions (being a good Democrat, without a clue) see The Gold Confiscation Issue
Nov 28, 2004 … Exchanging gold in other than common coin form was a little …. and $20.00 denominations, but mostly the 10 and 20 dollar coins) were …

On the subject of HillBilly’s obscene profits:

When I was stationed at Wheelus AB in 1962 the price of cigarettes was raised from $0.90 to $1.00 per carton ($0..10 per packet) I wrote an anger letter of protest to the Post Exchange (PX) and got over 125 signatures appended. (Three stripe Airman 1st Class was being paid $136.00 per month plus room and board - aka Barracks and Chow Hall). Relenting, the board dropped the price back to $0.90 a carton.

(By comparison, the NCO club charged $0.10 for all brands of beer. $0.15 for a shot of liquor and $0.25 for a “called shot” i.e. by brand name - Jack Daniels; Johnny Walker; Crown Royal, etc.)

In retrospect - figuring in the Governments State and Federal tax plus 6% sales tax. I now am being charged $47.00 for a carton.

Doesn’t the $46.10 increase (figuring increased factory costs and retailers normal profit markup) represent at the least, confiscatory, obscene profits?

Maybe HillBilly, Inc. can attack the government’s obscene profits? Not likely - aka “not”. (Heigh-ho, Silver, and Away!!!)

I am relatively adept in the use of search engines but I can’t find when, exactly, gold prices in the USA were deregulated.
All I can find is the dates 1968 and 1971.
I could have sworn it was during JFK’s presidency but it seems that’s not the case.
Can anyone point me to some specific information?
    Thank you

JL3rd - #15 - From my #13 link - Not just what you wanted but it might help: “These Presidential Executive Orders making it illegal for private citizens to own gold were in effect for 40 years until they were revoked by, you guessed it, another Presidential Executive Order (11825) on 31 December, 1974. What a lovely late Christmas gift from Gerald R. Ford! Americans were free to do whatever they pleased regarding gold coins and bullion again. May it ever be so.”

Yeah, and it’s still a HUGE windfall profit, by Pelosi’s measure.

Politicians like to intersperse percentagw and raw dollars, according to which method suits their purpose. This stuff works because of the ignorance many people have of peercentage.

I teach (part time) in a local 2 year college. They are courses that are relatively heavy with math, and are the first courses a student usually takes when first entering his degree plan. Obviously the students are somewhat fresh out of high school. One of the first things I ask is,”Who pays more taxes, the millionaire who is taxed at 10% or the poor family who is taxed at 10%?” I’m always amazed at the ones who will say “It’s unfair! The rich guy pays the same as the poor guys.”

It is difficult to get many of them to understand that % is meaningless until you state what is the base is.

And you wonder why it is so hard to pass a truly fair tax of, say, 8% ot total gross income (NO deductons) for everyone.

    http://www.nma.org/pdf/gold/gold_history.pdf

1973 AD - On February 13, U.S. devalues the dollar again and announces it will raise the official dollar price of gold to $42.22 per fine troy ounce. Dollar-selling continues, and finally all currencies are allowed to “float” freely, without regard to the price of gold.

    A little tidbit from Michelle Malkin I thought a strange observation;
P.P.P.S. It’s funny: One of Janet Reno’s most significant accomplishments as attorney general was capturing Elian Gonzales and sending him to Cuba. Now she’s trying to get dangerous terrorists out of Cuba and set them free…
    Posted in: Al Qaeda, Gitmo
Sorry Michelle; I was under the impression that: It’s NOT funny: One of Janet Reno’s most significant accomplishments as attorney general was sentencing 74 men, women and children to death — including twelve children younger than five years of age.

I dogpiled “Waco, TX children’s deaths”:

Re: # 21 - “Your comment is awaiting moderation”

I wasn’t quite sure so I looked it up:

    moderation |ˌmädəˈrā sh ən|
    noun
1 the avoidance of excess or extremes, esp. in one’s behavior or political opinions

    moderation
    noun
1 he urged them to show moderation self-restraint, restraint, self-control, self-discipline; temperance, leniency, fairness.
2 a moderation of their confrontational style relaxation, easing (off), reduction, abatement, weakening, slackening, tempering, softening, diminution, diminishing, lessening; decline, modulation, modification, mitigation, allaying; informal letup.

Do I understand this to mean that my political opinions aren’t “Politically Correct”?

Is Janet Reno; The Waco Massacre &/David Koresh taboo subjects and thereby “Off Limits”?

Well the “Your comment is awaiting moderation” has disappeared so maybe it was much ado about nothing, but it was a comment I hadn’t seen before on ScrappleFace so I was concerned, unduly so it appears. “a tempest in a teapot” perhaps? I hope so.

So long as our postings remain within the realm of - ethical; legal; and moral, it disturbs me to see an “awaiting moderation” flag.

I’ll let “sleeping dogs lie” unless someone else comments and revives it.

prettyold #7 - “For crying out loud ,why isn’t the NYT demanding the USA pull out of Chicago……”

I’m pretty sure the USA has done just that. I was raised mainly in Illinois - that part referred to as “Little Egypt”. aka “Southern Illinois (Marion, West Frankfort, Ina, Whittington, Spring Garden, Mt. Vernon, Carbondale, Buckner, Benton, etc.) - we moved, a lot!

The only thing left in Chicago, Chicago Heights, Naperville, etc. is very, very old gangsters from the roaring twenties, former residences of the Cabrini-Green housing project, leftovers from the Daley machine and a few other nere -do-wells of similar stripe. Not 100% liberal Democrats but close enough to account for a rare few conservative Republicans constituting a percentage factor, virtually indistinguishable from zero.

So, prettyold, it’s a close call, but with impunity I can safely say that the USA (that’s real Americans, mind you) has effectively “pulled out” of Chicago.

btw I believe that must include B. Hussein Obama and others of his ilk (i.e. Mr. Jeremiah Wright and his whooping, hollering, cheering congregation.)

So effectively, there are few, if any, Americans left in Chicago, Illinois.
