Virtual Recession Sparks NY Times Ad Sales Halt

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 18 Comments

(2008-05-03) — With the nation on the verge of “a near-virtual likely recession”, The New York Times stopped selling advertising today in an effort to help readers conserve “what little money they have left.”

“We realized we were sending mixed messages,” said Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr., “Our reporters and columnists say ‘Economic disaster is upon us’, but our advertisers say ‘Spend, buy, borrow’.”

“Our integrity,” he said, “demands that either we stop reporting on predictions of a very-probable, possibly-imminent, almost-certain recession-like economy, or we stop encouraging people to buy stuff, take on debt and live it up as if the world were not practically about to end.”

The moratorium on advertising sales will continue at least through January 2009, Mr. Sulzberger said, when he anticipates a positive change in what he called “the chief economic indicator,” a housing benchmark determined by which political party controls the White House.

A socialist’s brain of a Lefty liberal is illustrated here. The outcome of the general election will determine whether the White House gets a special-D discount from the Old Gray Mare.

A rare one. I almost had forgotten - I just got a “You must log in…..” By my best recollection, it’s been at or over a year since I’ve seen that.

Woke me up though… today’s thread is really good, Scott, the “doom and gloom” crowd is acting as if Armageddon is already upon us. But as Rush noted the bad mortgages they’re carping about involved less than 1/2 of 1 percent and the libbers are all aflutter with their dire predictions - (I could wish they would pack their bags and go join their sob-sisters in France, so they could all unite in a mass surrender to the enemy.

Pogo once said, “We’ve met the enemy and he are us.” That rings truer today than ever before. Islamofascist, the Commies of No. Korea; No. Viet Nam; Venezuela; Cuba; etc. are serious annoyances for sure, but they
collectively are mere nuisances when braced up against Americas most dire threat; Liberalism, with it’s “Church of the Godless” complete with their prophet Mr. Algore and those of his ilk garnered about himself. Personally I’d prefer a dozen Jeremiah Wrights over one committed liberal with a cause.

Camojack: From the very end of last thread. Thanks for your kind comment about my poem, “Duty” that I posted last night. I don’t often inflict my creations on the public but I was hoping maybe somebody would like it. I’ve only had one actually printed, “The Bowling Tournament” was printed in the International Bowling Congress’s monthly magazine and much later in the Muskegon, MI newspaper. I’m not a poet, mostly just a rhymer who likes to play with words (especially olden, out of date, seldom used words.) For instance when did you last use the word “pelf” in a sentence? Let alone using it; very few people even know what it means. (the more frequently used “pilfer” might give you a clue.) anyway - thanks again, you made my day with your comment.

I updated my WordPress blog yesterday-that’s the 3rd or 4th time since I’ve had it, and I was no less fearful that I was going to send the whole thing into the ether but it worked okay.
I got hold of Service Pack 3 for XP and installed it a few days ago. Then, a few hours later, I saw where Microsoft had pulled it [gulp!]-nevertheless, it is a real improvement.

I believe the reality is this, after the release of the latest economic figures it is the New York Slime’s fortunes which are in recession, not the American economy. I bet there were any number of moonbats really disappointed that the American economy hasn’t slid into a recession after nearly three years of the liberal media trying to convince the American people Great Depression II was just around the corner with Bu$Hitler in the Oval Office.

Sure it might be news competition from the Internet but the NYT’s precipitous financial nosedive is probably exacerbated by its left-wing whacko bias that it had kept well-hidden until the last eight years.

See this videoclip and determine for yourself if John Conyer’s wife, Monica Conyers, is smarter than an 8th grader.

What is even more pathetic is her attempt to justify her indefensible behavior at a city council meeting by making comparisons with a student not being happy with their teacher. But what do you expect from your typical self-righteous liberal jerk?

  • 13 MajorDomo // May 3, 2008 at 3:43 pm

It is Liberals’ primary job in life to paint the American Way as bleak as they can. The only hope they have in gaining power is to take advantage of the ignorance and apathy of the general public. Just look at the propaganda being poured out on such things as global warming, “gay rights”, abortion, Alar, the Snail darter, the “all gods are equal” crowd, etc., ad infinitum.

Brilliant as usual, Scott. Mini-Pinch Sulzberger and his “our itegrity“…indeed! The Old Gray Hag (thanks, Camo) hasn’t had integrity for years…if ever!
Seems like every month when the dire economic indicators are tallied, the experts are surprised. Their accuracy rating rivals only the meteorologists at the Weather Channel! They’ve been talking down the economy since President Bush took office. Their scare tactics make me sick! As in the old “smoke ‘em if you’ve got ‘em” adage, I say, “if you’ve got it, spend it! Nothing makes a dhimmie more unhappy than success (good news) during a Republican administratio

The NYT could do us all a great service by not using ink for their articles and as a by-product, they would no longer need vast amounts of tree fiber thus freeing up millions of carbon credits for the liberal elite to purchase in order to ease their conciences over their vast consumption of fossil fuels. An unintended consequence would be the elimination of one of the biggest provider of anti-american propaganda in the US.
As for Ms. Conyers, it shows you can take the ghetto with you no matter how high you rise in society. Her behavior was everything you see stereotyped about the the black community, yet it was accepted by all in attendance except for the one voice calling for adjournment. Crime, violence, murder all seem to be found in them and tolerated. While organized crime can inflict some of these behaviors, in the end it has to refuse those values refuse to give them creedence and demand better from the men, the family and society.
If the Times goes, then part of the liberal hold on our society which is good. I doubt the NYT is read in the majority of the black community but it does go to the people who can effect change in the system and it effects all of America to our detriment at present.

wv: where rented - this is getting spooky!

I’ve always hated that crossword puzzle, because the clues aren’t straightforward. Too much work.

Oh, there was some integrity there…a LONG time ago. Not in recent decades, though…
