Reagan Librarian Says Gipper’s Mantle Not Loanable

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 32 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2007-05-03) — A librarian at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, where 2008 Republican White House hopefuls will meet for their first debate Thursday night, said today that the famous Reagan mantle is “for reference use only, and will not be loaned out to any of the current crop of candidates.”

The Gipper’s mantle and its companion legacy have not been seen in public since the former conservative standard-bearer wrote a letter announcing to his fellow Americans in November 1994 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“The Reagan mantle and the legacy are not items that anyone can just casually pick up and carry around,” said the unnamed librarian, “although it was President Reagan’s intention that they be kept in circulation, so far no one able to bear them has appeared.”

As for the 10 Republican presidential candidates, the librarian said, “They may come. They may look and talk, but they can’t touch this.”

If Democrats were to hold a debate in the Clinton Library, would they be told the mantle of the Zipper is not loanable … well with the exception of sHrillary and her lockbox, of course.

Boy did you nail that one on the head, Scott. I loved the last line. Where’s a good conservative when you need him????

  • 4 camojack // May 3, 2007 at 8:41 am

Fred Thompson might be able to touch it…

  • 5 Maggie // May 3, 2007 at 8:47 am

“2008 Republican hopefuls.”……I didn’t realize there were so many.

  • 6 camojack // May 3, 2007 at 8:58 am

Hey! Maybe ol’ Jack (del Camo) should run…or walk. Still waiting for last year’s knee surgery to finish healing up…

  • 7 Darthmeister // May 3, 2007 at 9:17 am

…Why don’t you bike in, camo?

And if you show up in a motorized wheelchair you might get some sympathy votes. You’d have my vote but I’d make sure your staff would keep you away from the Big Red Button!

  • 8 gafisher // May 3, 2007 at 9:29 am

Unless and until conservatives demand conservatism instead of just wringing our hands at its lack, the Reagan Mantle will, er, remain on the mantle.

(But, oh, that someone would come along with the guts to ask for and demonstrate a double portion!)

Bi-sickle or motor-sickle? I’ve got both. If I was a viable candidate (I’m about $100 million shy on campaign funding) then the Secret Service would have to accompany me; then we could start a new biker club. Either kind, or both…

    CAMO FOR PRESIDENT!
Can I be secretary of Music and Satire?

  • 11 Libby Gone // May 3, 2007 at 9:52 am

Of Course that would mean the White would have to be moved tp Hawaii………

  • 12 seneuba // May 3, 2007 at 10:04 am

Sad, but true. All the politicians are trying too hard to be the best “candidate”; they would do well to focus on being better men.

But my hope does not lie in any man…my hope lies in the only One who is worthy of my hope. My Lord Jesus. Amen?

Funny. Last night, my son asked me for help with a speech he must give at his high school commencement. We wanted a quote and we headed straight for Reagan! We had such a good time together reading stuff like…

“I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” and…

“Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.”

Alas, we could not decide on one. The boy will simply thank those who helped him during his short lifetime.

Among those? you may have guessed…Ronald Reagan.

If I am elected (yeah, right!)…ummm, Music sure, but I’d appoint Scott as Secretary of Satire. Nice alliteration there.

Nah, that’d just be where the (WAY!!!) Western White House would be located…

Hey, that man just stole the mantle and put it in his socks!!

Maybe I will watch the debate to re-visit the library. Great view and down right pretty place to spend some time.

If you never been to the Regan “shrine,” you should go back to the California Mecca.

Other than that I am not sure the debate will offer any surprises

Well, if Camojack isn’t stepping up to the plate, Fred D. Thompson is indeed the only one who might lean on the mantle. Mr. Newt has personal “issues” that the socialists will play against him mercilessly, should he announce for office.

Still alive and reading along on Scorpion Hill…

camo: re. #4 (and Possom re. #21): Thompson is the only one I’m aware of who can wear Reagan’s mantle and win. (There are a couple or so that have already declared who could wear it, but don’t have nearly the charisma or name recognition to win.) I’m hoping he declares either tomorrow (at the Lincoln Club) or within the next couple of weeks.

  • 23 woodnwheel // May 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm

That should have read Possum, not Possom — my sincerest apologies, my friend!

Let Scott carry the mantle forward, and if we can’t beat them we can at least laugh at them.

I think I’d be unelectable too, even if I had the $100 million campaign fund…but we’ll probably never know.
