(2002-11-07) — The newly-elected junior Senator from New Jersey resigned today, and the state’s Governor announced his replacement.
“My work here is done,” Frank Lautenberg said. “Like a relief pitcher. I came in to save the game for the team. Nobody seriously thought I was going to serve out this term. Give me a break, I’m 78 years old.”
The governor has named former Senator Robert Torricelli to fill the unexpired portion of Lautenberg’s term.
“I’m grateful to former Senator Lautenberg,” said Sen. Torricelli. “He ran a clean campaign. Not everyone can do that.”
