Iranian Diplomat Denies Seeking Democrat Nomination

by Scott Ott · 24 Comments

(2007-03-11) — Despite his call this weekend for a timetable for the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Abbas Araghchi, told reporters at a multinational peace conference in Baghdad that he has “no immediate plans” to seek the Democrat nomination for the U.S. presidency in 2008.

But of course, in political circles, such denials only set tongues to wagging, spur pundits to handicap the hypothetical race and send pollsters to the phones.

An overnight Quinnipiac University poll of likely Democrat voters showed that while 93 percent could not pronounce the Iranian diplomat’s name, a majority still felt that his opposition to the U.S. occupation of Iraq proves that he has “the right stuff” to mount a serious bid to head the Democrat White House ticket.

Sen. Joe Biden, D-DE, already a presidential candidate himself, said the deputy foreign minister’s early bump in the polls shouldn’t come as a surprise after the rock-star treatment received by presidential rival, and fellow war critic, Sen. Barack Obama.

“I mean, you got the first mainstream Iranian who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Sen. Biden said, “and he doesn’t have the baggage some of us carry of having voted for the Iraq invasion in 2002. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

I dunno, the Osama / Obama ticket still has the ring of inevitability to it.

Finland’s Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen also reported that as of this time he has no desire to run for the Democratic presidential horse race

I agree with gatfisher… in the same way Condi would wipe other candidates off the GOP’s radar if she threw her hat in, an Osama announcement may render Barak and Hillary impotent.

It just occurred to me that satan himself would be the ideal Democrat candidate.

  • 8 da Bunny // Mar 11, 2007 at 10:06 am

JL3rd, yeah, why settle for Satan’s minions when the dims could have the “real deal” himself. Of course, in many of his minions’ cases, the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” [and you KNOW what I’m talkin’ about…]

He’ll only run as Vice President on Obama’s ticket, so its all a smokescreen.

Being a Muslim fundamentalist he can’t have anything to do with women like sHrillary since they see them as infidel whores.

Actually, this mook looks better than the current slate of candidates.

Why not vote for someone who is openly “death to America”? The RINO candidates will let it happen through their inaction, and the Dims are hiding behind their hypocrisy and radical agenda.

He might not get my vote, but I can at least muster some respect for an open enemy. Jump in, Bubba! Everyone else has!

In related news, Abbas Oligarchy apologized that he was unable to attend last week’s anniversary of the Civil Rights march in Selma Alabama, but he promised to join his fellow presidential contenders in Memphis Tennessee on April 4th to commemorate the fatal shooting of Martin Luther King.

Not only is he against the US invasion of Iraq, his govenrment has been more effective than the Dems at killing Americans troops. But, don’t worry, the other Dems will catch up when they pass the “Let’s Bitch Our Way Out of Iraq- Part Deux” spending resolution

  • 14 Rock Slatestone // Mar 11, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Sometimes I wonder if the dems are wanting an invasion by terrorists so they have something else to blame on President Bush and Katie Couric can keep her job.

  • 15 Darthmeister // Mar 11, 2007 at 1:50 pm

At least Abbas Araghchi is honest about his hate for Bush and America. Also none of this Orwellian “We Support the Troops” while we “slowly bleed them out of Iraq” nonsense.

Forget all those upstart wannabees, folks …

Senator Hillary Clinton (Д,New York) is still the Man !

  • 17 RedPepper // Mar 11, 2007 at 2:47 pm

    And to illustrate my point:

“He was smart, he was dynamic, he was inspiring and he was Catholic. A lot of people back then said, ‘America will never elect a Catholic as president,’ but those who gathered here almost a half century ago knew better,” she said. “They believed America was bigger than that and Americans would give Sen. John F. Kennedy a fair shake, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

    HILL: I’M THE JFK OF 2008 .

Possumtrot, it looks like there is a possibility Former Senator Fred Thompson might run for the Republican nomination. He’s pro-life, pro-GWOT, pro-troop surge, opposes gay marriage, would pardon Libby … he has all the conservative bona fides. Apparently Hollyweird hasn’t affect him one whit which is quite a testimonial in itself. And he has enough name recognition that he could win. An interesting possibility.

  • 21 JamesonLewis3rd // Mar 11, 2007 at 11:51 pm

I wonder if anyone else (besides me) was offended by HRC’s implication that she equals JFK.

There has been speculation about Fred Thompson’s possible presidential bid circulating for the past week or two and, today, he told Chris Wallace, “I’m giving some thought to it. Going to leave the door open.”

    I like it.

    Thompson/Hunter in ‘08!?
    Real Republicans

  • 22 Possumtrot // Mar 11, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Fred Dalton Thompson and Newt Gingrich are the only two potential candidates who split any atoms for me. The rest of the field on both sides leaves me yawning and indifferent. The RINO “conservatives” are insipid at best, and the liberal socialists are what my Bible refers to as “antiChrists”.

There are a few good guys who work in Hollyweird, but they keep a low profile with their political beliefs. (They have to work for a living, y’know.) To name a few, there is Kurt Russell, Gary Sinese, Gary Oldman, Clint Eastwood, and Kelsey Grammer. I know there are some conservative women in Hollyweird, too, but they stay even lower under the radar.

  • 23 Possumtrot // Mar 11, 2007 at 11:58 pm

And, lest I forget, Danny Bonaduce, who brooks no nonsense from anyone.

  • 24 Darthmeister // Mar 12, 2007 at 7:35 am

Clint Eastwood may be a conservative but he’s opposed to the War In Iraq.

Bo Derek and Patricia Heaton are a couple of conservative actresses who support America’s war on terror. Quite an irony for Bo Derek since she is so closely associated with the movie “10″, but I hear she is a conservative Christian now.

Here’s a more complete listing of Hollyweird conservatives but may as well remove Arnold Governator’s name and Mel Gibson is said to oppose the war in Iraq … when he isn’t drunk and making anti-semitic accusations.
