(2007-02-10) — In what many consider a backhanded slap at the conservative Fox News Channel, Democrat Sen. Barack Obama plans to officially declare his presidential candidacy today in Springfield, but his campaign has not invited the town’s most famous residents — Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson — to the speech.
The controversy over the Simpson snubbing threatens to overshadow what should have been the high-point of Mr. Obama’s career, and his greatest accomplishment to date.
The Simpsons, whose fame grew from simple comedy sketches and led to a popular Fox TV show and a feature-length Hollywood movie, have almost single-handedly put Springfield on the map and made it virtually the best-loved town in America.
“Obama is using Springfield to ride Homer’s coattails,” said Mr. Simpson’s agent, “He says he’s running a new kind of political campaign, but by ignoring the Simpsons right in Homer’s backyard, he sends a clear message that it’s politics as usual.”

I was reading “Onlineanalysts” post on the last thread in regards to when the MSM is going to start covering success in Iraq. Buddy I hate to be the bearer of bad news but they won’t. There is one way we will all be able to tell we have succeeded though. The news will have moved on to other stories.
I have noticed that for years the lead story was always the body count in Iraq. Now it’s usually several stories into any news broadcast and less than 15 seconds. If they only waste 15 to 30 seconds discussing the losses we know they won’t bother to discuss any successes.
It’s hard to watch the evening news these days though, they have moved on to discussing Hillary’s latest remarks and O’Bama speaking where ever. In the eyes of the media the race for 2008 will come down to these two people and they aren’t shy about saying so. Me thinks they will be surprised.

Cost to taxpayers? Some $15,000 an hour.
A round-trip to Rep. Pelosi’s home in San Francisco could easily run $300,000. Meanwhile, the same flight on a commercial jet can run less than $300.

“Osama Obama…Alabama Obama…uh…what is his name, what is his name?” [Paul Shanklin is a genius!]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I grew up in Central Illinois, a little over an hour’s drive east of Springfield. Having been to the Old State Capitol, Lincoln’s Home, Lincoln’s Tomb, etc. on several occasions, and having been a student of Lincoln’s political and personal history for most of my life, I know that Lincoln was a very great man from the humblest of beginnings. His intelligence and insight transcended his lack of all but a few weeks of “formal” education. While not a follower of any organized religion, he was a very Godly man, whose goal in any situation was to do the right thing, and not the easiest or most popular thing. He literally gave his life to preserve the union of this great nation, and he stuck to his principles in the face of overwhelming opposition.
The audacity of arrogance displayed by this charlatan Obama, in comparing himself in any way to Abraham Lincoln is beyond comprehension. They both have lived in Illinois…and that’s where the “comparison” ends.
I think this will be the most convoluted election in history. With every criticism of O’Bama being labeled as racist and every criticism of Hillary being labeled sexist they are going to cry, stomp, and complain when we go after their liberal records and their lack of qualifications.
So sit back everyone, buckled up tight, because this is going to be a bumpy ride. As I said last week, Moveon.org is already running attack adds against John McCain here in Iowa. Next Saturday we will be attending a town hall meeting where he will speak. As Republican Candidates go I am about luke warm but frankly they are all a better alternatives to what the Democrats are serving up.
Does anyone remember the short lived TV show “Max Headroom?” Is it possible to program the perfect candidate? The people who we can support don’t seem to have a chance, the people we aren’t thrilled about seem to be media favorites. What is a conservative to do?
29 RedPepper // Feb 10, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Mack: IMHO, those “media favorites” will shortly discover just how fickle the “favor” of the MSM is … especially if you are a Republican …
30 JamesonLewis3rd // Feb 10, 2007 at 4:03 pm
I believe that one of the advantages of this “race” getting to such an early start is that, when election time comes-after two years of being patronized and played for chumps-the American public will show their disgust and choose the “right” candidates.
This whole thing is getting more sickening by the minute. The MSM seems to think that Obama should be elected simply because he has negroid features, Clinton simply because she is a female or either one simply because they are not Bush (who, as far as I know, is not running).
I hate to say it but it doesn’t matter who runs as the Republican candidate, that’s who I’m voting for-a gun to my head would not induce me to vote Democrat.
31 Darthmeister // Feb 10, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Fox News Live is presently running a series of videoclips of imams, clerics, and run-of-the-mill Islamists telling us exactly what they want to do to kafirs, infidels, Israel and “Great Satan America”. All other lamestream media outlets are gutless cowards not running this stuff wall-to-wall.
As one expert noted: Radical Islam is Nazism with a fez.
32 Mack // Feb 10, 2007 at 4:23 pm
The bigger problem is that people get so tired of seeing attack adds they don’t vote. More to the point they detach from the process all together. Conservatives either don’t vote at all or are swayed by the non stop liberal infomercials we all know as the MSM.
On the bright side the general public is catching on. It’s funny that Rush Limbaugh has a bigger audience than ever before but major newspapers and magazines like the New York Times and Time magazine are laying off people. CNN and other former news conglomerates are cutting back staff because they no longer have the market share and their income is down because of it.
I said it before, the all out media blitz is going to back fire. Hillary will sicken the population who has to sit through thousands of her approved messages. By that time a retarded monkey could run a write in campaign and be the next president. Besides, even if she does win the nomination she will never make it in the general election. Republicans despise her as much as Billy.
33 nylecoj // Feb 10, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Re #28,
It is not just criticisms that are being leveled as racist, President Bush made the ‘mistake’ of calling Obama articulate in an interview which is apparently condescending. According to the women being interviewed by O’Reilly the other night he should have known better than to say such a thing especially after Biden’s remarks. What the two comments have in common I have no idea, and for some reason I always thought articulate was a good thing.
34 JamesonLewis3rd // Feb 10, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Exactly. Any newcomer would (or should) be judged on their ability to articulate their stance on various topics. Good grief.
35 Mack // Feb 10, 2007 at 5:35 pm
If you look at the world from the point of view of a racist, everyone that is like him is articulate and perfect. To say that one person is articulate is to assume that others of that race are not. This is another liberal word trick I have seen trolls play for years, even on this site.
They do these little twists of their opponents words to put us on the defensive. Like two threads back when neverthink was insinuating that Heirborneranger was threatening him. Our mistake is to let him get away with it. We attribute some form of misunderstanding on their part and feel the need to explain ourselves and even apologize because they misunderstood.
Personally I have come to a place in my life where I no longer feel responsibility for their stupidity. I no longer feel the need to correct their intentional misconceptions. To do so is to give some form of credibility to people who have none. Frankly they know very well what was intended. Biden did insinuate that black people were not articulate. He has done similar things for other minorities such as his joke about people from India owning 7-11 stores.
The President was being gracias and everyone who saw the interview knew it. All I ask of conservatives is that we quit being so nice to the mean spirited hateful little twits who oppose us and tell it like it is.
In describing Barack “Osama” Obama, Sen. Joe Biden said: “The first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy … that’s a storybook, man.”
President Bush: “He’s an attractive guy. He’s articulate. I’ve been impressed with him when I’ve seen him in person.â€
So when two Democratic black women went on the O’Reilly show to rail about “racism”, at whom did they point their fingers …. George Bush! Freakin’ partisan race-baiters! Another reason I despise double-standard liberals of all colors.
41 gafisher // Feb 10, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Y’know, Howard Dean would make a pretty good Homer (although he’d also give Herschel Krustofski a run for his money), and Hillary has to have been taking Selma lessons. San Fran Nan is almost a ringer for M. Szyslak, and Teddy Kennedy could fill in for Horatio McCallister if the bridge was wide enough. John Kerry strikes me as a fair Montgomery Burns, though I’m not sure Barney Fwank could live up to the Waylon Smithers standard. I wonder what other Simpsons characters the Dems could play.
42 GnuCarSmell // Feb 10, 2007 at 9:06 pm
My take on Obama fever is that a segment of the population is driven by a need to belong to the latest fad. Since that need is emotion-based, it really doesn’t matter if there is any substance underlying the fad — in this case Obama. These folks are like lemmings, but curiously, have taken to calling themselves “reality-based” recently. The guy is like an exotic pet, and exotic pets have a way of messing in their cages eventually, leaving their admirers disenchanted as they wait for the MSM to announce the next lighter-than-air novelty.
There’s nothing necessarily wrong in following a fad when it’s something silly and inconsequential, like American Idol, Harry Potter, or the DiVinci Code. But a President wields great power and can influence the lives of millions. This guy has not shown a shred of evidence he has any leadership ability whatsoever. He has the gravitas of a multi-colored party balloon. So I look upon those dancing the Obama Boogie as terribly unserious and unthinking.
But then, what would the Democrat party do without them?
43 Mack // Feb 10, 2007 at 10:24 pm
I think what bugs me the most about the media is that they are the people who should know the truth and choose to ignore it for a more splashy lie. That is the essence of evil. When millions of people nationally and billions around the world are subject to policies dictated by public opinion, and that opinion is based on an agenda driven lie, we all suffer.
With that in mind I hold the press in lower regard than the politicians who use that bias to manipulate the public. Were the media to tell the truth and report factually without bias there would not be a single Democrat in public office outside of maybe Massachusetts or California. The super liberal enclaves want perverted masochistic despots to be in charge.
Obama was in Springfield to ask Apu to be his VP. He isn’t overlooking the Indian voting block.
“Thank you-come again!”
It is not fair to say Obama doesn’t know about Lincoln. It is one of his favorite cars to ride in just behind a Caddy Limo or Escalade!
45 Darthmeister // Feb 10, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Osama Obama is such a phony. From Captain’s Quarters:
Obama made a number of references to Abraham Lincoln in a subtle attempt to address the critcisms of his lack of experience. Lincoln also had a lack national political experience and no track record as an executive, and went on to become perhaps America’s greatest President. That happened in the context of a civil war, though, and Lincoln’s greatness came from standing up to secessionists and ignoring demands for an end to the war and a political compromise that would have split the nation.
Obama, on the other hand, wants to inherit the mantle of Lincoln while essentially arguing for everything Lincoln opposed. He wants to assume the leadership of the new Copperheads, who believe that the present war cannot be won and that America should withdraw forthwith. Obama seems closer to George McClellan in this regard, who lost against Lincoln in 1864 after getting fired by Lincoln as commander of the Union Armies.
From prior thread #143 RedPepper - thanks for the posting and selected quote from Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God”. I could post the entire sermon (but I won’t) One of the greatest sermons ever preached anywhere, by anyone!
It was preached to non-Christians and the beautiful part is in its describing with incredible accuracy the non-Christian’s precarious position in the eon’s of time. And yet, from that position, anyone capable, can Believe in God’s love gift - His Son, Jesus, the Christ - in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. “For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast.†(Eph. 2:8,9)
So that in all of mankind, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God†(Rom. 3:23) we are comprised of two groups only. Group 1 = Sinners saved by Gods grace (unmerited favor) and Group 2 = Sinners who are not saved.
This “All roads lead to Rome balogna is just that; balogna sliced and served by the Deciever himself. “It doesen’t really matter what you believe, so long as you believe in something.†or “All faiths lead, by different routes, to Heaven.â€
That’s how you get to earn yourself a “72 year old virginâ€, although some of the poorer translations render that portion as “72 virginsâ€.
I can’t spell. I can barely remain conscious. I did manage to see most of Jodie Foster’s”Flightplan” today. There was also something called “Reindeer Games” that starred Gary Sinese - one of the good guys - with the eternally ineffeable Ben Affleck, who will never be a good guy since he married J-Lo. She was also on display today in “Out of Sight’, which is a moderately good Elmore Leonard thriller.
Jodie Foster is remarkably good-looking for a middle-aged woman with a chronic fear of men.
This sentence from the inarticulate transcript of his inarticulate speech caught my eye:
off topic. On Wednesday, January 31, My wife of 24 years, and my 13 year old daughter were killed in a car accident. They were on their way to school where my daughter was a 7th grader and my wife worked as an instructional assistant working with physically challenged children. I know, from reading the comments on here that many of you are strong in your Christian faith. I am asking for your prayers for my 7 year old son and myself so that we can make some sense of this tragedy. Any words of encouragement are welcome. My email is:
[Editor's Note:
John,
This is no time for strength. It is a season for intense prayer. It is a time for weakness, dependence and reliance upon Christ -- the God of all comfort. No words can suffice, but His own Word. No explanations can make sense of it. We can only look to Jesus, who, though He had done no wrong, suffered and died to fulfill the Father's plan. May you find encouragement in Christ, and grace to guide your son lovingly along this path through the valley of the shadow of death.
John #88, as a Christian you know your dear wife and daughter are now and forever enjoying that which you most desired for them, having completed the tasks set before them by the Lord here on earth and now in His glorious presence. You rightly request prayers for your son and yourself, for we were not created to experience this parting brought into the world by Adam’s fall.
I pray that you will find some comfort in the knowledge that He who will never leave you nor forsake you has a purpose even in this tragedy, and that all things, even this, work together for good to them that love God. [Romans 8:28] But take comfort too in the fact that many here, though you might never know them this side of Glory, are now holding you, your son, and those others so painfully touched by this tragedy before the Lord.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” [Jeremiah 29:11]
John, the words of mortal man can only be of little consolation to those who have suffered such an unimaginable loss as you have.
I sincerely pray that the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, guards you and your son’s hearts and minds in Christ Jesus in the coming days. May the warm embrace of our Good Shepherd be your constant companion during these difficult times.
Brother, we do not want you to be untaught about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. According to the Lord’s own words, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. I Thessalonians 4:13-17
John,
Let me add my prayers of comfort for you and your son. We know not the day nor the hour when we are called back to the Father, yet we have the message of Christ’s promise to sustain us in times of challenge. Surely, as you bade your loved ones that morning to their day’s activities, you hardly expected not to see them again. The shock of your loss must have been grievous at the time, and as each day brings new reminders, your hurt must be deeply wounding.
As Scott says, place your trust in God’s goodness to comfort and sustain you for the challenges ahead. We Scrapplers pray for you and your son, at the same time knowing that healing will come through such faith and prayer that places our life’s burdens in His hands. God bless you both.
