(2006-11-10) — Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee said today he may leave the Republican party, and is also considering ending his stormy marriage with pop star Britney Spears.

“I have been a faithful member of my party, just as I’ve been true to Britney for all these years,” said Sen. Chafee. “But I feel we’ve grown apart. I’ve stuck to the Republican principles of larger government, less aggressive national defense and moral flexibility, but the the party has been co-opted by ideologues who have taken it in a new direction.”

The dual announcements shocked both the political and entertainment worlds as leading experts in both realms had not previously known of either relationship that Sen. Chafee plans to sever.

Just how old is that bimbo Britney Spears, anyway? Isn’t this her second divorce, already?!

As for “Republican” Lincoln Chafee, he left the Party a long time ago…

  • 4 onlineanalyst // Nov 10, 2006 at 7:59 am

“I didn’t leave the party; the party left me.”-Ronald Reagan

It’s too bad that the RNC made a bad “investment” in Chafee, for it had been apparent to the electorate for a long time where he butters his bread. So long, Linc. Maybe you and Britney can seek a reconciliation — or an “understanding” — since the shallowness of you both indicates a lot in common.

I thought Steve Doocy and Lincoln Chaffee were the same person. Is Lincoln leaving Fox and Friends, too?

  • 7 egospeak // Nov 10, 2006 at 8:09 am

You can’t sever something that never existed. I’m refering to his relationship to the Republican party. A relationship to Britney “Just call me airhead” Spears, I could believe that.

Godfrey, I left some comments in reply to your post 56 on the previous thread.

  • 9 Ms RightWing, Ink // Nov 10, 2006 at 8:27 am

Alright I’m confused. I wake up to Britney Spears married to a politician. I thought she was married to a rap singer gangsta. Oh well, maybe they are politicians

  • 10 gafisher // Nov 10, 2006 at 8:35 am

Chafee (RINO) and Lieberman (true Democrat dumped by his own) are grand demonstrations of the fact our old Party labels are obsolete.

As, by the way, is the concept of “loyal opposition” in this country.

  • 11 Darthmeister // Nov 10, 2006 at 8:36 am

If this election was all about the war, then why did Chafee, the only Republican who voted against the war in Iraq, get so soundly beat in a blue state? It’s pretty clear, the blue states got bluer and partisan ideology triumphed over job performance since Chafee was bringing home the bacon. There’s other evidence to support this.

But the Dems had better watch their steps the next two years because the votes on loan from the swing voters can leave as quickly as they came. If the Dems attempt to ram a left-wing agenda through Congress and if they prove to be useless in improving the prospects of completing the win in Iraq, we could see those close races this time around go to good conservative Republican candidates resulting in Republicans gaining back both houses of Congress AND the Presidency. And if the Dems misbehave really badly, this could energize even more conservative voters like the 2004 Elections.

It certainly will be an interesting two years and actually the Dem hold on both Houses of Congress are razor-thin. I don’t see Harry Reid being the Senate leader for those two years.

Peggy Noonan’s article in The Wall Street Journal today is the best response I have seen to the elections so far. She said it good and straight.

Go Peggy [for what ever reason I never find a way to copy the web address, so you got to find the WSJ on the web]

    Happy Birthday MARINES!!

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS

On November 10th, 1775, our Corps was born as the Continental Congress raised the “first and second battalions of American Marines.” Each Year as we celebrate our birthday, we pause to reflect on the Marines of yesteryear who fought in our touchstone battles and forged the modern Marine Corps with their courage, integrity, and undying commitment to their fellow Marines. Each of our storied battles is a link in the long chain that binds all Marines together- from the Continental Marines at Bunker Hill to the Teufelhunden crossing the wheat fields of Belleau Wood. This chain binds us to the Marines on the crest of Mount Suribachi; it passes through the ice and snow of Chosin Reservoir and the steaming jungles of Vietnam, and it anchors firmly today in the sands of Iraq.

This year’s celebration again finds many from our ranks, serving with distinction in harm’s way. As we have for the past 231 years, our Corps is answering the Nation’s call. I can report first hand that our Marines fighting on the front lines of the Long War on Terror are performing brilliantly, acquitting themselves with honor, dedication, and dignity in difficult and dangerous environments.

All Marine are making a difference. Regardless of where you are serving, you are adding new chapters to the legacy that was earned with sweat and blood on old battlefiellds. Just as previous generations of Marines shaped today’s Marine Corps, your deeds are molding the Corps of tomorrow. Our Corps has never been stronger, and all Americans are extremely proud of your magnificent performance and unwavering commitment to server our Corps and country. With high caliber Marines like you, our future has never been brighter.

Another irreplaceable element of our success as Marines is the terrific support we receive from our families. Through the long hours, the exercises, and the combat deployments, their support is unconditional and firm. They give us love and devotion, providing us with the strength to drive on when duty calls. Today we should all acknowledge our loved ones for their patient, steadfast service.

To all who have earned the title Marine, to the superb Sailors who serve with us in every clime and place, and to our precious families- I wish each one of you a heartfelt Happy 231st Birthday.

    Semper Fidelis and Keep Attacking!

    M. W. Hagee
    General, U.S. Marine Corps

    Deus est Semper Fidelis

First Order of Business for Democrats: The Draft

Hey, according to some DemDonks this is what America has to do if we’re serious about the war on terror. This I’d have to see!

  • 21 Just Ranting // Nov 10, 2006 at 9:12 am

I could just picture Ronald Reagan with his good natured humor saying this…”I knew Lincoln. Lincoln was a friend of mine. You, Chafee, are no Lincoln.”

  • 23 onlineanalyst // Nov 10, 2006 at 9:25 am

    Can you say deja vu?

    from captainsquartersblog.com:

“Now that the Democrats have won their Congressional majorities, they now have to govern for the first time in 12 years. They made a lot of campaign promises, especially regarding Iraq, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus wants to make sure those get honored. To that end, they have turned to a new guru on war — one who led Democrats to a massive defeat via his own defeatism in 1972:

“George McGovern, the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, said Thursday that he will meet with more than 60 members of Congress next week to recommend a strategy to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by June.”

Can you see the writing on the wall? Can you “connect the dots”?

Rangel is playing coy about the funding in Iraq and bringing the topic of the draft back to the table. Baker is playing footsies with Iran and Syria (who have been supportive of Iraq insurgents) to quell (???) the Iraq insurgents. Murtha wants payback for W’s not making him the dictator. The troops are demoralized by the loss of Rumsfeld.

And the youth vote is no longer shaped by Moore but by Jon Stewart if the http://www.townhall.com article is accurate in its assessment.

Do you hear helicopter rotors slicing the air? Or are you too busy counting up the dollars in your minimum-wage increase and your “free” health care? Do you have “flowers in your hair” as you head to San Francisco to join San Fran Nanny in her “new direction”?

    Good Morning, SGT USMC.

May the U.S. Marine Corps have many, many more birfdays. Ooo raah! Thank you all for your dedication, service and sacrifice to this great country.

Here’s one of the official Marine Corps websites.

  • 25 Darthmeister // Nov 10, 2006 at 9:27 am

Now that’s plain funny, Just Ranting. Lincoln was certainly no Cadillac in the Republican Party this time around.

    Where’s the Muslim outrage?

Javanese trader Hasanuddin appeared in Jakarta Central Court yesterday charged with planning and directing the murders in October last year. He faces a death sentence if found guilty under anti-terrorism legislation.

Hasanuddin allegedly returned from a visit to members of Philippines Islamist group the Moro Islamic Liberation Front with tales of how that organisation regularly staged bombings to coincide with Lebaran, the festival that ends the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He later spoke with a preacher in Poso, Central Sulawesi, about whether such a plan could work in Indonesia, but expressed doubt about whether it was appropriate.

However, after further discussion with friends, he decided that beheading Christians could qualify as an act of Muslim charity.

Conscripting several accomplices at a local pesantren, or Islamic school, he directed one of them, Lilik Purnomo, to seek out “the head of a Christian”, prosecutors alleged.

“It would be a great Lebaran trophy if we got a Christian. Go search for the best place for us to find one,” Hasanuddin allegedly ordered his companion.

Lilik returned to say he had found an “excellent” target - a group of schoolgirls who travelled to and from class by foot in the Central Sulawesi village of Gebong Rejo.

And the Donks will continue ignoring the growing threat of Islamofascism in their pell mell plunge toward universal appeasement and showing cowardice in the face of the growing Muslim fascist threat. Until the so-called Muslim moderates can mount an ideological campaign which disarms the radical interpretations of the Koran, Islamofascism will only get worse. Maybe Muslim moderates can’t mount such a counter-campaign because the Koran doesn’t lend itself to an intellectually honest moderate approach. Something to think about.

I know we are all disappointed by the results of this election. Our GIs serving in Iraq and Afghanistan must also be disheartened too. I tried to go online to write a note via “Operation Dear Abby”, but their website is no longer functioning.

However, there is a site that is picking up the slack, and going one step beyond. It provides you with an opportunity to communicate directly to specific service members who are serving in dangerous places overseas. On the site it lists the names of military personnel who are trying to meet the needs of those in their unit. You can select at random from a list of a few thousand homesick GIs, and request his or her mailing address. You can write to them, send care packages, or just remember them in your prayers.

    The website is:

    http://www.anysoldier.com

You can select a member of any branch of the service and make their Thanksgiving and/or Christmas a little brighter. Please take the time to let them know that even though the political leadership in Washington is changing, our devotion to them and their cause remains unchanged. On this the birthday of the Marine Corp may we on the home front always exemplify the spirit of Semper Fidelis.

If anyone knows of other websites that are helping GIs, their families, or the families of fallen GIs, please list them here so we can help wherever we can.

When Chaffee lost the election, I shouted, “YESS!” and clapped my hands so loud that my dad, who had fallen asleep, had a panic attack as he was waking up.

That was, indeed, the high point of the day. At least if Harold Ford, Jr. had won here in Tennessee, there would have been a conservative Blue Dog in the Democratic Senate to challenge Harry Screed and Dick “Our Troops are like Soviets in their Gulags” Durbin. But no, instead we cancelled out Chafee’s defeat by sending another RINO, Bob Corker, to the Senate instead.

On behalf of my entire stupid, redneck state, I apologize. :-(
