(2002-10-31) — In the wake of a brutal attack by a California man wielding a hatchet, several U.S. Senators have co-sponsored a bill calling for registration of hatchets, axes, adzes, sickles, scythes and other cleaving weapons.
The bill would establish a computerized database of every such implement in the nation. In addition, manufacturers would have to provide the federal government with a log that has been hacked by each tool they produce.
The new legislation is expected to hit the Amish community especially hard.
No Amish could be reached by phone for this story.
