(2005-11-23) — Rep. William Delahunt, D-MA, announced today that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez would add to a previous agreement to ship low-priced oil to the poor in Massachussetts, by including a substantial quantity of cut-rate cocaine as well.
The 2.5 tons of cocaine, seized by the Chavez government in a remote eastern region of Venezuela earlier this week, will be offered to underprivileged Massachussetts residents at 40 percent off retail.
“This is a humanitarian gesture by President Chavez,” said Rep. Delahunt as he joined Venezuelan officials in front of a poor Boston resident’s mud hut to deliver 100 gallons of oil and a 20-gram bag of cocaine. “Since George Bush was appointed in 2000, Massachussetts Democrats have not had a president they could call their own. Today is the first time in years that we can joyfully say, ‘Thank you, Mr. President’.”
Rep. Delahunt, who serves as the third-world state’s ambassador to Venezuela, brokered the oil deal during a four-hour dinner with Mr. Chavez recently.
Asked what it was like to dine and chat with the democratically-elected socialist dictator who publicly refers to the U.S. president as “a madman, a killer and a mass murderer” , Rep. Delahunt said, “It was just like a normal dinner with the Ted Kennedy and John Kerry-nothing unusual.”
