(2005-10-29) — President Bush today refused to comment directly on the five-count grand jury indictment that led to the resignation of Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby as the vice president’s chief of staff yesterday. However, he said he was concerned about the suggestion that “anyone in my administration wasted valuable time trying to discredit former ambassador Joe Wilson.”
“There’s no sense in making an effort to discredit Joe Wilson,” said Mr. Bush. “It would be superfluous. He’s a self-discrediting machine.”
The president said that Wilson’s role as a policy advisor to presidential candidate John Kerry before he wrote a New York Times column slamming Bush’s Iraq policy, his “sloppy, inconclusive uranium probe” in Niger and his subsequent public pronouncements “have done more to his credibility than any enemy could hope to do.”
“If it turns out that Scooter, or anyone else in my administration, was doing this on the clock,” said Mr. Bush, “They owe the taxpayers a refund. That’s just pure government waste.”
