(2002-10-19) — Unnamed media experts revealed today that some large corporations pay thousands of dollars each day to promote their private agendas in the New York Times, on CNN and countless other allegedly objective “journalistic” enterprises.
The revelation has raised concerns among watchdog groups that this “soft money” from corporate fat cats and special interests could influence news coverage and the positions the editors take on certain issues.
“About 75 percent of a newspaper’s money comes from advertising,” said the source. “Hyper-elite business interests have literally bought and paid for the news and opinion printed daily in the Times and other papers. Because it’s so blatant, few have noticed. The corrupting influence lies hidden in plain sight. Big business literally pays the salaries of political pundits and influential editors.”
Legislation will be offered this week in Congress to regulate media “soft money.”
Meanwhile, the FCC has ruled that news organizations must cease and desist coverage of politics in the 30 days leading up to an election.
