(2002-10-15) — United Nations Security Council members Russia, China, Britain and the United States continue to await directions from France on how to compel Iraq to obey U.N. sanctions. Insiders agree, it’s the French who call the shots when it comes to global security.
“We don’t dare make a move without approval from Paris,” said one delegate. “The French are not only the world’s most respected diplomats, but the acknowledged power brokers in military affairs.
French political muscle turns the wheel of international relations, and no global coalition can stand without the imprimatur of France.
“If the land of liberté - égalité - fraternité wants two new resolutions on Iraq, then two it shall be,” the unnamed delegate said. “If the French say it’s to be one resolution, then who has the gall or the resolve to oppose them? We patiently await their mandate.”
