(2005-04-01) — Ex-Clinton administration national security advisor Samuel ‘Sandy’ Berger entered a Virginia hospital today suffering from an “acute skin inflammation on his wrists” minutes after learning of the punishment he’ll face for smuggling top-secret documents out of the National Archives.
After a year of intense negotiations with the Justice Department, Mr. Berger agreed to be convicted of a misdemeanor, pay a fine of $10,000 and lose his National Archives library card for three years.
A hospital spokesman said Mr. Berger is “resting comfortably after treatment with a soothing topical ointment.”
Under the terms of the Justice Department settlement, Mr. Berger is allowed to retain his position as Secretary of State in the Kerry administration.
