(2002-10-02) — Hours after a New Jersey court decided that Democrats can place Frank R. Lautenberg’s name on the ballot in place of Sen. Robert Torricelli, Republicans announced that candidate Douglas R. Forrester is being replaced by National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
“Torricelli bailed out because he knew he’d lose,” said a GOP strategist. “We think Lautenberg might beat Forrester, so we’re dumping him and getting Condi Rice. Hey, every sport allows substitutions.”
Reprinting ballots for the state will cost about $800,000, which the Democrats will pay through corporate sponsorships. Sen. Torricelli has personally sold enough sponsorships to cover the cost. Ballots will bear a tasteful corporate logo next to the name of each candidate.
