But for Saddam's mental illness, I prescribe a topical application of copper-jacketed lead delivered at about 1000 feet per second. It should clear right up. I read the latest translation of Saddam's last messages to his troops before running (I mean withdrawing) from Bagdad. It said " Fear not my faithful unbeatable warriors, we will win in the end. I have a plan. I am going to disguise my self as a Senator in the US and run for President on the Democratic ticket. When I am elected there will be virgins for all -- at least 72 and not in blue dresses -- And even if not elected the CIA will brief me on all that is going on the world before the election so I will know all the Americans secrets. We can then take advantage of those secrets to kill the infidel dogs. Maybe a few more planes or bombs or something to kill thousands more American dogs. I have the gas so I can unleash that upon them, they can never find my cache of gas, I hid it too well. We will triumph in the end, may their stomachs roast in hell" I know this is a true translation 'cause I got it from "Bagdad Bob"!!!!! Did you for 1 minute even consider the fact that cops are being laid off across the country so we can ""secure"" Bagdad? Is this in our national interest Mr Sage? read my post from 1:13,the democrats get theirs as well,I for one cant stand someone who compromises their principles for a vote. the democrats who didnt have the courage to take on Bush when given the chance certainly are worse morally than the man who simply doesnt know any better. How can you consider this man a conservative as he spends money he doesnt have to secure a country 8000 miles from washington and in the meantime local communities are laying off cops because of state cut backs because of federal cutbacks etc.... his own economists are predicting a record 475billion deficit which will ballon to 930bill at the end of his term,1/2 of this is due to the bush tax cuts of 01 and this year. he should know what happens with tax cuts as his old man lost in 92 because he had to bail reagans butt out of the fire. do you people even know what a conservative is?? Rock for brains: Tax cuts do not cause deficits. Spending more than tax receipts does. The major tax cuts of recent history, Reagan included, caused massive increases in tax receipts. You see, the economy is not static. Decreases taxes will typically increase economic activity and growth. Taxing 20% of $100 is better (from a tax receipt and economic perspective) than taxing 25% of $75. More GNP, and more tax receipts. But if you increase spending more than the increase in tax receipts, we get deficits. If you want to bust on Bush or Republicans for allowing spending to continue to spiral out of control (continue, not create -- the Democrats are responsible for the creation of most of these awful money pit programs), I'm with you. But you won't really do that, b/c you like spending, and you like taxing. Nothing is more fun than altruism with other people's money. The deficit also is only a record in "gross" terms. The % of the deficit is still quite small. Again, using small numbers you can understand, if I am an evil rich person making $100,000/year (maybe $50,000 after taxes in your perfect world), and I spend $105,000, I have a $5,000 deficit. But that is only 5% of my income, and probably quite manageable. On the other hand, if my income is $20,000, and I have a $5,000 deficit, that is 25% of my income, and I am in deep doo-doo. The so-called deficit (BTW, we never had a surpluss, real or imagined) under Bush is still a small % of GNP, and smaller than many deficits in % terms in US history. The top 1% of US income earners pay about 17% of all taxes; top 50% pay about 95% of all income taxes. Who isn't paying their fair share? Posted by: Rock at July 16, 2003 03:29 PMThe tax cuts you mentioned Rock - they all resulted in more "revenues" for Uncle Sam, not less. I agree that the Republicans have done a poor job of stopping the spending bleeding, but it would be worse with Democrats holding all three (Pres/House/Senate), and anyone thinking differently is silly. Remember, increased spending was necessary for military reasons. The problem lies in the fact that Democrats nationalized everything - law enforcement, welfare, war on poverty, etc. The states became dependant on US tax money b/c the tax rates grew to the point that the States couldn't really do the taxing themselves. As the feds reapportion some of the money, the States will have to make tough decisions. If Republicans tried to cut social spending domestically, the Dems would go on the offensive claiming they hate old people, children and minorities. And the Rep are too wussy to fight that. Something occurred to me. When the media and the left (redundant?) speak about government abuse, when the example occurs under Democratic leadership, it is always "the evil Government." Ruby Ridge and Waco were the FBI's fault, or the Federal government's fault, but not Clinton's fault. These remarkable examples of overhanded tactics are not referred to as the result of a Democratic administration. But when stuff like a Patriot Act abuse happens, or even a NYC cop shooting, it is referred to as a problem of the Republican heading that administration (Bush's Patriot Act, Rudi's rouge cop problem). Why is it only Republicans that can be tyrants at times? Over here kj {motioning with hands} The Boston FBI is currently on the hook for about 5 billion in law suits because the informants the feds were using are currently being charged with 19 murders. This doesnt absolve Miss Reno, the attorney general for the children, for burning 80 of em in Waco, however Ruby Ridge and the initial charge at Waco are strictly on the Feds. Posted by: Cassandra at July 16, 2003 04:41 PMnow THERE's a classy comeback... Posted by: Cassandra at July 16, 2003 04:54 PMThe deaths at Waco rest squarely on the shoulders of David Kour..Cur..that nut job who claimed he was the Messiah. Ruby Ridge is more questionable, but when a 12 or 13 year old points a gun at me, he ceases to be a child and becomes a target. As for Ms. Nut-job and the baby, that was a tragedy. Well, the baby was. Mrs. Nut-job had free will, and if she had had any sense, she would have bugged-out and gotten away from Mr. Nut-job. No, I don't remember their names, and I really don't care what they were. It's really very simple: if you don't violate federal firearm's laws, then agents won't come to arrest you. If they don't come to arrest you, then there won't be any firefights. Rock, Greenspan didnít criticize the tax cuts, in fact he was all for the end of double taxation on dividends and in fact agrees that tax cuts are the best way to stimulate a lagging economy. What also he said was that the tax cuts should be offset by spending discipline, which you and I are in agreement on. The expansion of Medicare, the Farm bill and the nod given to every new entitlement in face of the war on terror is a mistake that hopefully can be corrected with a much more controlled Congress and enhanced revenue over the long term. But you canít blame the tax cuts for the economic slowdown; they tax cuts have barely taken effect yet. And your argument about cops being laid off is bogus. State aid was increased in the last budget. And removing a thug with God-Knows-What and harboring God-Knows-Who has been in our best interests with regard to foreign policy. The atmosphere in the Middle East has changed dramatically since the war: Israel is finally making concessions and Palestine has a new PM. The two sides are talking again The Democrats wonít take on Bush because they canít win the election by doing so. And that is the only thing in their best interests. The kid was trying to protect his mother who had just been shot by same said sniper. The whole thing was a set up after a BATF agent had offered a sawn off shotgun that was 1/8 of an inch to short to meet federal guidlines. Care to eyeball a 20 inch barrel and tell me if it is 1/8 inches to short. The BATF and the FBI have admitted under oath before a Republican lead committee that investigated the incident, after Democrats wanted to not investigate and voted to not have a committee meeting upon the subject, but were forced to by the majority. Ruby Ridge was and is a disgrace. Waco should not have happened. If the FBI really wanted Korish, he always went jogging at the same time and same place every day. He could have been captured with out any bloodshed, nuch less the murder of the children and women that were burned to death. IMHO the people responsible for such acts should have been held accountable and given jail sentences; however, as the Demoncrats like to point out, how does one put the Attourney General and the President in jail? Impeachment, that didn't work. Just a few thoughts at the end of a long day. Posted by: Old Sailor at July 16, 2003 06:15 PMGod never interferes in the affairs of men. He did not create a huge storm for three days just before the Iraq war which blew away all the sand from the minefields. God did not cause a fog to arise to allow Washington and his army to escape Brooklyn Heights, a fog which lifted just as the last boats shuttled men to Manhattan. God did not cause a fog to arise in Yorktown that Corwallis would attempt to shuttle his men across the York and break out against the weaker force on that side of the river, nor did he cause the fog to lift once Corwallis had moved one half of his men to the north side of the river. God did not cause a squall to arise that the American carriers could reach an unbeknownst effective attack position northeast of Midway Island, nor did he delay through mechanical problems the launch of Japanese Scout plane number four off of the cruiser Tone. When the scout number four finally was lauched then the Japanese finally found the Americans, but only after three Japanese carriers had been sunk. God did not ensure the passage of the compromise of 1850 which allowed a decade of railroad building to occur in America shifting the northwest's allegiance to the northeast instead of the south. (The northwest: Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, etc. had been economically tied to the south because of the use of the Mississippi to transit goods.) God did not ensure rain the evening before Agincourt that the oppressive French nobles would drown in it the next day. Nor did God raise up a girl of 17 to lead the French army 20 years later to throw off the English who had themselves become oppressive and aspired to a European empire. God never intended that English geographic isolation, once they were pushed off the continent, provide for the development of a common law system and the growth of understanding and codification the natural rights of man. God did not thwart Napolean's desire to conquer Europe with a horrendous Russian winter. Nor did He do the same with two back to back such winter's in Russian when the Nazi's invaded. God certainly did not hinder French colonial designs on Mexico with a rainstorm the evening before the battle of Pueblo causing the heavily weighted French Dragonnes to fall in the mud to Mexican peasants. God in no way ensured the naval encounters of the Solomon Islands occured at night that the inferior but quicker US fleet might defeat the heavily armed and armored Japanese fleet. God did not send the US carriers on patrol just before Pearl Harbor. God did not blow out and away with a deep boiler explosion a man being sucked down the smokestack of the sinking USS Arizona when he was praying, "The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord, He is our strength in the time of trouble." And of course God would never have allowed over 600,000 Americans to fall in the War Between the States that He would show the people who founded a country on His existence that all men are created equal and that He does not stomach hypocrites. All American causalties combined from all other conflicts still do not equal the deaths in that war to end American hypocrisy. No, God did none of these things, Or did He? Half of the stuff Bush has passed has not passed either the Senate or Congress. Sometimes it's because of Democrats giving filibusters. Whose fault is that? SRG: I think I said that a while ago.. it went something like this: I concur srg, copper jacketed should do the trick nicely. Nurse, my putter please. Rock, credibility was restored to the whitehouse once the arkansas white trash was moved out. Dubya should've fired willie's boy tenent though. And because you're long of tooth, it's been said "A young man who isn't liberal has no passion. An old man who isn't a conserative has no brains." Posted by: Frenchman Jr. at July 17, 2003 03:22 AMMonsour Rock, Your weekly supply of gerbils has just arrived. What are you doing with those things? Posted by: Gay Frenchman from Pet Shop at July 17, 2003 03:54 AMGreetings But what exactly are we to do? There is certainly no answer to this coming from the left, merely whining, and I think most Americans can tell the difference between constructive criticism (loyal opposition) and shrill whining (today's Democratic party). And I wish there were two legitimate parties in America, but only one presents us with problems and solutions these days. The other is content to stop after identifying a problem, and in the case of Iraq it's a problem that everyone is well aware of. Given the left leadership's propensity towards incessant complaint it should be no surprise to anyone that some people in the military are willing to whine and cry publicly too. Most of this sort join the military for the pay and benefits and endlessly bemoan their fate when the time comes to do what they must. Barring swift corrective action they do indeed drag down the moral of real soldiers. Don't be fooled, we are an all-volunteer military and we are all doing what we swore to do. More likely (hopefully) the young men were tired and just blowing off steam at a moment they thought it was safe to do so. Unfortunately, however, is a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and CBS may have set the boys up for Courts Martial and long prison time in return for their little slam at Dubya. Of course, for the first week or so of their incarceration they'd be the hottest cause celebre going, so that would be just fine for CBS, I'm sure. Then some new attack on Dubya would be launched and our boys will be forgotten for the remainder of a very long separation from their families. Soldiers complain? Just like the fry chefs at McDonalds and the Techies at Microsoft. That must have been some serious investigative reporting to find someone in the Army with a gripe. Give the reporters a Pulitzer. From the NY Post article linked above: Greyhawk, right on. I have had to administer NJP and the type of insubordination the young lads exhibited will eventually get them in lots of trouble. Civilians do not understand they Uniform Code of Military Justice or the Rule and Regulations of the DOD. When one puts on the uniform, you give up the right to critize the Comander in Chief or others in the chain of command unless one has gone through the proper procedure in the chain of command. I wonder how long it will be before the Military Unit those folks are attached to will administer NJP?? Posted by: Old Sailor at July 17, 2003 08:53 AMNo, Jericho. He didn't do any of those things. I recall the memo stating that soldiers in uniform were subject to UCMJ action if they spoke out against the CINC ... that evil mastermind Bush had that published in 1997 anticipating this very day. Posted by: Frodo at July 17, 2003 12:00 PM1997, eh? He was way ahead of his time, then. And a year before Bill Clinton (who used to be a President) signed the Iraq Liberation Act. One question, then: Was Bill Clinton (who used to be a President), merely his puppet? Posted by: The Other Scott at July 17, 2003 12:03 PMSomething a lot of soldiers and sailors do not know is that they are not permitted to critize any elected official while they are in uniform. This was a part of making the rules so that the military is always subservient to civilian control. I wonder if any NJP has been administered yet? It seems like these folks have offered themselves up to the altar of "example". Posted by: Old Sailor at July 17, 2003 12:11 PMThe interesting thing is that (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the USMJ does not apply to civilian spouses of AD military, but we were also warned not to criticize or ridicule the CINC when Clinton was in office. This happened shortly after he took the oath for his first term, so he obviously felt strongly about it. Posted by: Cassandra at July 17, 2003 12:24 PMI don't recall any warning to spouses ever coming out, jsut the warning about comments while in uniform. The UCMJ doesn't cover them, but with spouses it can be certainly awkward, especially for a senior NONCOM or any officer who has a spouse who speaks out (on any unpopular topic, not just politics). They might get an unofficial suggestion that they should get the spouse to clam up if they know what's good for their career. A soldier is also free to speak out as any other American when not in uniform and not performing official duties. The UCMJ also doesn't cover the actions of a soldier who made derogatory comments about a politician when out of uniform UNLESS he does so in a way that undermines good order and discipline. For example, if private Snuffy went out in civilian clothes and protested President Clinton he was perfectly within his rights as an American exercising his first amendment privilege ... however if that same private Snuffy got up on the podium and announced he was a member of the military and he and all his army buddies thought President Clinton was a slimy so-and-so ... then he is subject to UCMJ because he tied his act of protest with his military affiliation. Posted by: Frodo at July 17, 2003 12:51 PMPrivate Snuffy??? Not sure if there was an official memo regarding spouses or whether someone got overzealous (could very well be the latter). It happened at 2 consecutive commands, so I assumed it came from higher up the food chain. Those darn spouses - it's so hard to get them to behave properly... Posted by: Old Sailor at July 18, 2003 09:27 AMCNN LEAD STORY In a surprising development, the White House backpedaled on previous claims that Iraq had amassed huge stockpiles of Brass Monkeys. As most Americans have now learned from the 329 Democratic candidates for the Presidency, the threat posed by these Brass Monkeys was the principal reason given by the Bush administration for invading Iraq, a poor unsuspecting nation that was only minding its own business. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer stated, "We may not know what these Brass Monkeys are, but they definitely pose a threat to our national security. Although we haven't found any actual Brass Monkeys in Iraq, we've found plenty of their horrid little red caps lying around - also some vests, organ grinders, and brass molds that could be quickly converted to a simian shape". Senator John F. Kerry (Vet., VietNam) offered to investigate. "Since I am a Vet, and VietNam has monkeys, I am clearly the only candidate qualified to launch an inquiry into this shameful affair. The intelligence gap must be filled with unsubstantiated allegations of wrongdoing on the part of the Bush administration. Whether or not they are ever proven true, they can only help my candidacy. Have I ever mentioned that I spent a night in jail?" The Rev. Al Sharpton quickly countered that monkeys clearly originated in Africa. "This makes me the candidate best equipped to lead the investigation. Bush is obviously part of a racist plot to...well, give me a minute and I'll think of something..." Senator Bob Graham had less to say about the furor, commenting that he could sum it up in five words: "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle." The language is contained in Artilce 88 and reads "Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct." Artilce 89 deals with disrespect to superior officer "ART. 89 DISRESPECT TOWARD SUPERIOR COMMISSIONED OFFICER If an enlisted member bad mouths the President, there is no penalties. A commissioned offcier is "commissioned" by the President of the Unites States and this "commission" is forever unless rescinded. It actually gives offciers certain legal authorities, although the practice has not been used in a very long time. That is why Article 88 only applies to commissioned officers. That's it for my legal lesson today. Cya next class. Rock-you are a loon. Darth, not entirely true. He said it was up to the soldiers' direct commanders to decide if they should be punished. 'None of us that wear this uniform are free to say anything disparaging about the secretary of defense, or the president of the United States,' he added. From my experience, I remember it being this way as well, since many of us were not too happy about Bill Clinton (who used to be a President) coming in...luckily I was on my way out at the time. Most of those in command know little about the legal system covered under the UCMJ. I have advised many on what they can and can't do, and they have legal staffs to guidet them. For enlisted personnel, they cannot be insubordinate to their leadership, but because they are not commissioned by the President, they maintain a freedom to disagree. In order for a commander to take legal action against an enlisted member, they must show that there comments violated an article of the UCMJ. Insubordination or disrespect to a direct superior is one way, but saying the leadership is not doing their job is not punihsable under the UCMJ. If you hear of an enlisted member being punished, please let me know and I will defend him/her. Posted by: Darth Chef at July 20, 2003 11:26 PM |
