Sorenstam Paves Way for Women's Suffrage

(2003-05-24) -- Now that Annika Sorenstam has proven she can walk the fairways with the world's top male golfers, attitudes about women are undergoing a tectonic plate shift. In the halls of Congress, there's even talk of letting women vote.

"She showed us that women can be strong, and even smart," said one unnamed Congressional aide. "I don't think you'll see a constitutional amendment this year, but women's suffrage is now almost a foregone conclusion. Annika has paved the way."

In related news, officials in New Jersey, inspired by Mrs. Sorenstam's barrier-breaking performance, will consider an ordinance to allow "mixed public bathing" as long as women are "properly attired".

Judging by the era in which the "Thank You Annika" placard was being held and seeing her on TV. I'd say Ms. Sorenstam has been responding to ALL the HGH spam mail she's been getting. She certainly belies (what I would calculate to be) her age. You go girl!....or person?....dudee?...

In recognition of the obvious differences between women and men, the women's voting booths will be moved up twenty yards, and they will be allowed to change their minds.

Posted by: veg at May 24, 2003 11:17 AM

A special cyclical voting schedule will be allowed for those women who every 28 days lose their mind temporarily.

The malady is referred to as PMS. Which is defined as Possible Murder Suspect.

The cyclical voting is expected to curb random voting booth violence.

Good question!...Michael Jackson, Boy George, and others may have asked the same question...minus the part about liking girls.

Really I would think it would be safer to have you join YW than some of the "W's" that like girls a little TOO much. YIKES!!!....

Did you read that one post about Patricial Ireland being hired by YMCA or YWCA...? You really wanna get near THAT?

***JAGCAP**** I won't pretend to have paid close attention to this whole thing...#1...golf bores me ( apologies to golfers and fans) 2ndly--like you said: "what's the big friggin deal"?.

Equal pay, opportunity, etc., for women---YES... But I for one don't HAVE to be allowed in some "boys club" to prove my equality or ability, etc.

I would think Ms. Annika could be more effective in rallying the womens golfing troups and maybe bringing that more front and center. Seems to me it would make a better use of her time.

Again...not a golf fan ( unless I need a sleep aid...the golf channel..LOL)..But Nancy Lopez is the last name I remember hearing in regards to women and golf.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about...but I tire of the notion of "having to prove you're a woman" by having access to "boys clubs".. ( "boys" NOT used disparagingly)...

I know who I am and don't need to crash a testosterone party to prove it! LOL

Estrogen taking regular breaks from testerone ( and vice versa ) is crucial for the survival of the human race. HAA HAA HAAA....( but ya know its true :~)

MICKELSON ANNOUNCES PLAN TO PLAY IN LPGA

Phil Mickelson announced today that he would play in the upcoming McDonald's LPGA Championship. Mickelson sited the pioneering woman golfer Annika Sorenstam as inspiration for his decision.

ìWhat Annika did in playing in the PGAís Bank of America Colonial was a true inspiration. Even though she didnít make the final cut, she did prove once and for all that a woman golfer can compete with the men. Inspired by her courage, I am determined to prove that a man can compete with women golfers on the LPGA tourî.

Asked for comment, LPGA commissioner Ty M. Votaw stated, ìWell, weíre really not too thrilled about it but what are you going to do? We destroyed Vijay Singh when he came out and said Annika shouldnít play in the PGA, so it kind of boxes us in if we try to ban Phil from the LPGAî.

Mickelson expresses confidence he will be able to compete in the LPGA.

ìThe put their teeís 20 feet closer to the green, which is perfect for me. Besides, a lot of the guys on the tour have been teasing me lately, making fun of the size of my boobs, and that really hurts. I think the women in the LPGA will be much more sensitive to my conditionî.

Posted by: Lynch Family "I enjoy being a girl" Cat ( ORIGINAL) at May 24, 2003 04:05 PM

This is similar to affirmative action and quota issues. If a woman can compete playing by exactly the same rules, more power to her. I think women should be allowed to challenge themselves, but the men's tour shouldn't have to bend all the rules to allow that to happen.

If she can't cut the mustard, why not stick to competing against other women? It's not as if the concept of physiological differences hasn't been dealt with in male sports - in wrestling and boxing there are weight classes, so it's a recognized fact that size matters (all right - don't even go there!) in some sports. There's no shame in being in a lower weight class - it's based on some pretty inescapable rules of genetics: if you're a 5'6" man, it's pretty hard to compete against a 6'2" man.

People push themselves harder if you don't lower the bar for them. Even if women are NEVER able (vs. allowed) to compete professionally with men in golf, women's golf will progress more if they are aiming at a higher set of goals than if the standard is lowered to accomodate some phony desire to compete with the men's tour.

LF Cat:

re: IT's a wonderful world when men are men and women are women and no one is confused about it.*smile again*

Exactly. And isn't it sad that some women are in such a hurry to equate male with success, as if that were the only standard that matters?

Men and women have different priorities in life, different ways of doing things, and often different needs. And rightly so. I consider myself to be a success according to my standards. If I wanted to go work for a big corporation, I would make more and get promoted more often (because I've tried that), but I would feel trapped. And I've discovered that titles and constantly manoeuvering for max salary don't mean much to me.

Freedom and autonomy do. My family does. A mentally challenging job does. Working with people I trust and respect does. If I have these things, I have what I have always wanted and I am a success on my own terms.

On your post (above), real men appreciate a strong woman, because it takes a real man to keep a strong woman interested. And there are so many great men out there. So keep standing straight and tall!

I'm gonna hijack this thread, just because I can and its the most recent. Did anyone see the story about Paul McCartney's concert in Red Square?

Here's what Dobby the House Elf had to say about it

Putin, who confessed to being a Beatles
fan in his youth, told McCartney the band
had been an inspiration during Soviet
times, despite Kremlin efforts to
discourage Western music.

"It was very popular, more than popular,"
Putin said when asked whether he had
listened to the Beatles when contacts with
foreign music were discouraged. "It was
like a breath of fresh air, like a window on
the outside world."

Thats the same Putin who was a KGB officer in East Germany for 15 years, retired as a Colonel, and whose Kremlin bio originally had a 20 year gap in it where he apparently sat at home all day for 2 decades and certainly didnt kill anyone in the KGB

I thought that was funny. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Posted by: Thread Hijacker at May 24, 2003 07:27 PM

Okay, it is time to iron Dobby's fingers and slam his ears shut in the oven. These would be the same Beatles that made the oh so marvelous statement about how lucky you would be to be back in the USSR?
Putin wanted people to think he was trendy, even way back then.

Well, if the Beatles found the USSR so wonderful, why didn't they stay there, along with other celebs like Hanoi Jane, etc.

About Whats her name and the golf: Good. But *yawn*, I am tired out from helping Jessie with
her pt.

aaawwww this wonderful sound of the falling rain---it'll make for a good night of sleeping.

Of course if I see a moth I'll just HAVE to get up and go after it. Hope I don't bring down the curtain this time though. I do try to be careful. I can hardly help myself those things are just too much fun to chase.

Posted by: Lynch Family Cat ( ORIGINAL) at May 25, 2003 02:02 AM

Actually, some drunk shouted,"You da woman!"
I have no trouble with women playing in the PGA. This is actually the second time it has happened, and I'm not talking about Babe Didrickson. A couple of years ago a female club pro tried to get her tour card. I don't think she qualified, though.
Annika's playing in the Colonial wasn't a "bending of the rules." She got a sponsor's exemption, same as some male golfers who were playing well in the Nike tour but didn't have their PGA card yet.
I think we will see more women in the future playing in the PGA, and I don't think that is a bad thing.

Remember Susan Estrich's remark about wishing the Clinton's would go away because they just suck up all the air in the room (i.e., all the press coverage, leaving none for the Democratic "contenders")?

Might one say the same for Annika? With Annika's picture plastered all over the front of every sports page this week...did anyone happen to notice that Thursday night was also opening night in the WNBA? And did the LPGA even have an event this weekend? Plus her admission that she was in way over her head...this was NOT a good thing for women's sports in general.

Posted by: Robert at May 25, 2003 05:31 PM

I missed most of the Annika stuff. Did she actually qualify fair & square with the rules/ranking requirments etc of the PGA? Please tell me she wasn't given some special dispensation to get in the competition!

Posted by: AHA at May 25, 2003 10:02 PM

She was given what's called a "sponsors exemption" to allow her to play in the tournament, which basically means that the people who run the Colonial invited her. She did play from the same tees as the men. There is some debate over whether or not she took a spot which would have gone to a man, or if she was merely one additional golfer to the line-up.

From a business standpoint, it was a good move for the people who run the Colonial. TV networks expanded their coverage on Thursday and Friday, and ticket sales skyrocketed...all of which generated a huge windfall of revenue. Increased revenue for a MEN's event, not a women's event.

I still say it was bad for women's sports. There's only so much TV coverage and print media to go around...and this media circus didn't help the WNBA or the LPGA one bit. In fact, it could hurt future ratings for the LPGA. If you're going to take a nap in the recliner on a Sunday afternoon with the remote in your hand, is the TV now more or less likely to be tuned in to the LPGA event instead of the PGA? Even if Tiger isn't playing...more people are going to tune in to watch Els, Parnevik, Singh, Duval, and Mickelson (OK...only to watch Mickelson choke) than they are to watch another tournament...male or female...where the players are admittedly not in the same league and are not playing on courses as challenging. That was true before this weekend, and it's even truer now.

And to you feminists out there who still think Annika can hang with the guys...might I suggest that next time she borrow a chapter from Billie Jean King's playbook and play against the fossils on the senior tour. Of course...I suppose if she played in a seniors event and missed the cut....

I am all for women being treated euqally, or evn better than men. I think to even the playing field, more women should be forced to equalize their behavior to that of men. Too many women are resisting this "equality thing". How do we do this you ask. Well we requires that all women who use a pool, beach, or lake are required to dress similarily to men. Shorts only ladies.

I am liking this idea a bunch.
