Well Mr Scott "no nothing" Ott, I think George Bush will run again. But he will lose in '04 to the next Democrat President of America, Bill Terwilliger, who will soon launch his campaign in fool force. For all your passport and visa needs... IT'S EASY! McGovern was a World War II combat veteran, who ran numerous bombing missions at considerable risk to his own life. And when he ran for President in 1972 his combat experience didn't do him a bit of good, given that he carried only Massachusetts in the electoral college (and you know what they say about those who don't remember the past). Granted, McGovern didn't begin and end every sentence he utterred with a reference to his combat experience ("Well, speaking as a combat veteran who served his country in war, I think another round of tax cuts is a bad idea"). But then again, McGovern didn't have Kerry's "gift" for blatant double talk. McGovern may have been naive in his opposition to war and understanding of foreign policy, but he was at least consistent, unlike Kerry ("Mr. President, do not rush into this unnecessary, unilateral and illegal war -- which, um, I voted to give you the authority to wage"). "The biggest reason I won't stay is all those liberal derelicts who left the country when George Bush was elected will be coming back", stated Miller referring to people such as director Robert Altman, actor Alec Baldwin (who once played a Vietnam veteran), Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, former White House press secretary Pierre Salinger who all left the country shortly after George Bush was sworn in as president. Maybe because, as several Iraqi's have pointed out, the main cause of their discontent is that, in our naive desire to give them some voice in their own future, we didn't occupy them more aggressively and now the more lawless elements are causing trouble? seeing as we beat al-queda there must be someone else responsible for the atrocities in saudi, casablanca and their sister acts in jerusalem, kashmir and chechnya. ***Last time I checked, Bush has never claimed that we have beaten Al-Quaeda - he keeps saying they are still out there and are still a threat. And he also keeps saying they are not the only game in town and the war on terrorism is not over. Gee whiz - why can't the US police the entire fricking world and keep everyone 100% safe? Oh - I forgot - because the UN doesn't want us to and the libs say that would be empire building... Maybe the rest of the world might want to (gasp) assume a little responsibility and take some security precautions to protect themselves. Doh! - forgot again - the US is supposed to do that for them without entering their countries, causing them any inconvencience, or interfering with their freedom in any way. Much more efficient - this way they have plenty of free time to take potshots at us. I feel so stupid - I need to stay out of WalMart or migrate to one of those smarter nations... Posted by: Cassandra at May 19, 2003 01:27 PMcassie Well Wade, you have a point -- I am quite worried about Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan has worried me for a lot longer. However, the governments in both of those countries are making some effort to cooperate with us (even if those efforts aren't all we might wish for). Musharrif is between a rock and a hard place, and yet he has given us what support he can. They are better than the extremist nuts who are trying to remove them from power. Current events may prove that to be the case in Iraq, too, but I don't think anyone could argue that Hussein was making even a token attempt to work with us - he was openly encouraging Al-Quaeda to attack us and covertly meeting with them and offering them support. Just remember that DUBYA DESERTED HIS NON-COMBATANT POST WITH THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD. ALL HAIL THE DESERTER IN CHIEF!!! Posted by: Starchild at May 19, 2003 06:04 PMStarchild: check your facts - he didn't desert. The Boston Globe story was examined by several major papers (including the "extreme right-wing rag New York Times"). All concluded the charges were "without foundation". From an article by Tom Bevan: "The story of George Bush's "missing year" in the Texas Air National Guard was first reported by the Boston Globe in May. The Globe claimed that Bush, after receiving a transfer to a unit in Alabama in the spring of 1972, failed to report for duty until the end of April 1973. At the time, the Governor issued a quick rebuttal, defending his record and citing his honorable discharge from the Guard as proof that he "did the duty necessary." The issue disappeared from view until late September when it resurfaced in the form of a column (written by a farmer from Clinton, Iowa) on the liberal web site Tompaine.com. Two weeks later Gore advisor Paul Begala floated the rumor to a national audience on NBC's Meet the Press. "He never showed up for an entire year," Begala said. "Bush tells us to our face heíll restore honor and integrity to that Oval Office when I believe heís not telling the truth that he never, in fact, reported to the National Guard in Alabama." On October 31, the Boston Globe printed a "REPRISE" of its original report under the title, "QUESTIONS" remain on Bush's service as guard pilot." Enter Bob Kerrey". After reading the article, Kerrey called the Boston Globe and gave an unsolicited interview attacking Bush's record, going so far as to claim Bush had gone "AWOL." The Globe quoted Kerrey as saying that Bush had a "moral obligation of his own to search his conscience and answer questions" about his service record. Three days later, on Friday, November 3, Kerrey organized a press conference with fellow Medal of Honor winner Senator Daniel Inouye and called for Bush to make all of his military records public, again insinuating some sort of dereliction of duty. Nevermind that Kerrey's demand, issued as it was on the Friday before Election Day, couldn't possibly be completed in time to make the print deadline for the Monday papers. Even the New York Times reported after the press conference that its own review of Bush's record showed him serving during the time in question and that Kerrey's charges against Bush were "UNFOUNDED." On Sunday, November 5, Kerrey appeared on Meet the Press where Tim Russert questioned him on whether his recent comments about Governor Bush were "way out of bounds." Kerrey responded, "They're not way out of bounds. Certainly, if "STUTTERS" I mean, if I'd gone over the line and implied that he didn't serve honorably, "I APOLOGIZE"(HMMM). "HE DID SERVE HONORABLY". But I don't think he understands that when you come forward and represent your military service, you've got to represent it right, and he didn't." (Here comes the juicy part boys & girls) And now it turns out that Mr. Kerrey's own service record has been misrepresented. At worst, Kerrey committed acts that some would say qualify him as a war criminal. At best, he knowingly accepted a Bronze Star under dubious pretenses and failed for thirty-two years - including a race for Governor, two races for Senator, and a run for the Presidency - to correct the record. To be sure, serving in the Texas Air National Guard is not the equivalent of losing a leg in Vietnam. Still, Senator Kerrey, knowing the truth of his own service record and knowing (as he must have) that the press had been sitting on the story for more than a year, showed a disturbing willingness to use an unsubstantiated rumor as a vehicle to leverage his patriotism against another man's for partisan political advantage. " Which man commands the respect of the military? (Hint: it is not Bill Clinton)
Meme, 2 million out of 37 million is 5.4%. Also, any reports of 2 million angry Iraquis marching on Baghdad should be taken as seriously as the claims for attendence at the "Million-Man March." Gee do you think that the guy who ran his campaign on giving the military raises is more popular? Clintons 1st act as commander in chief was the ""dont ask dont tell"" policy which almost got him killed in february 93. That being said Truth be told they wouldve prefered a stand up guy like John McCain, who was rotting in the Hanoi hilton, while lil George was defending Houston from the Vietcong invaders. Random guy are you a screaming bigot or what. Jesse Jackson does suck but your comments are so obviously tainted I wonder what your real feelings are. Bigot? No. I just despise Jesse Jackson. Re: Irish joke. Wade: There are things about John McCain that I admire, but I think he would have made a lousy President. Ditto Kerry (and Kerrey for that matter). Service alone does not a great President make - it is a non-issue. And I haven't seen this resentment against Bush, at least in the Marines (don't know about the other services). Although perhaps it exists and I just haven't encountered it. Most military people don't expect their President to have served in the military, nor do they think it should be a prerequisite for being Commander in Chief. The military is supposed to be under civilian control. All they want is someone who respects them and who commands their respect. And someone who sends them in with a clear mission and doesn't shilly-shally around, waste their time, and get people killed needlessly (Somalia). Everyone I have talked to thinks Bush satisfies both conditions. Clinton didn't, and Gore wouldn't have, either. For the most part, the people who are hung up on Bush's service record seem to be people who never served (which seems a bit hypocritical) and people who have little or no experience with the military. I've not heard a single criticism of Bush since he took office - during Clinton's administration it was so bad that we were repeatedly told to shut up or we would face prosecution. How's that for free speech? (And yes, I know that military people don't have as much freedom of speech or political protest as the civilians they protect, but it still galls me). Posted by: Stoner at May 21, 2003 01:51 AMCassandra, You could not speak against that foul man for fear of being shot for treason, or brought up on charges of treason, the penalty for which we know is capital punishment. I personally know of one young man who was in ROTC and was booted out when they were having a b***h session after an FTX. His CO (whom we had known from another assignmnet)dragged him out in the hall and not only chewed him out for his free speech, but made an example of him and got him booted from ROTC because he made some rather pointed observations about Clintoon & Co. based on what they were watching on the news. And the fallout continues from the hypocrisy of his way of life. Clintoon had eight years to bugger up the military, and Bush is getting only four years to undo the damage that he has done to this nation and to the military. As far as there not being a record of Bush's military service, I can believe it, and I can also believe that he did serve. Here is why: For SIX MONTHS after dh was in the P.R. of California' National Guard, he didn't get paid. They had no pay record, but he still had to do the duty. They didn't get his pay straightened out until after he had been in for seven months and had already done his annual training. That was in 1989. He did get his back pay. It's OK because some people have better things to worry about than some racial/ethnic/gender-based "nickname". :) You're right - the double standard is annoying, but as I told my kids when someone was acting like a jerk: "Would you ever act that way? Look at it this way - being that type of person is its own punishment - worse than anything you can ever do to them." The women's movement has been up in arms for years about so-called "disparaging" terms like "honey, dear, sweetie, babe". As though being called "babe" is the worst thing that could happen to a person. My philosophy at work has been "call me whatever you want - just do what I tell you to when I tell you to do it, and we'll get along fine". I've never met anyone this didn't work with. Words matter, but actions matter more. Usually when people figure out you can't be baited, they shape up pretty quickly. I guess I prefer to let silliness like that wash right over me (and I realize that you do, too). I'm just glad my "self-esteem" isn't so fragile that I'm bothered by silly epithets that in most cases aren't even malicious.
