House restaurants change name for 'french fries' and 'french toast'
Move reflects anger over France's stance on Iraq

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The restaurant menus in the three House office buildings will change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries," a culinary rebuke of France, stemming from anger over the country's refusal to support the U.S. position on Iraq.

Ditto for "french toast," which will be known as "freedom toast."

The name changes were spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers who plan to hold a news conference later Tuesday to make the name changes official on the menus.

Across the country, some private restaurants have done the same.

"This action today is a small, but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France," said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, the chairman of the Committee on House Administration.

Ney, whose committee has authority over the House restaurants, directed the change, after colleague Walter Jones, R-North Carolina, circulated a letter suggesting such a move.

"I represent a district with multiple military bases that have deployed thousands of troops," Jones said in a statement. "As I've watched these men and women wave good-bye to their loved ones, I am reminded of the deep love they have for the freedom of this nation and their desire to fight for the freedom of those who are oppressed overseas," Jones said in a statement. "Watching France's self -serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say."

France has pressed the United Nations to give weapons inspectors more time in Iraq, saying the U.S. and British-led move to war is premature.

Its stance has angered some U.S. lawmakers.

Rep. Jim Saxton, R-New Jersey, has introduced legislation in the House that would block any French company from receiving U.S. government aid or financing in any reconstruction of Iraq. Another measure discourages American tourists, businesses and the government from participating in the 2003 Paris Air show.

Where is good old fashion police brutality when you really need it?

I believe that it is a good thing for local police to share the mainstream mores of their communities...this helps them with community relations in a difficult and dangerous job.

Obviously Whittier is not a town I would feel comfortable (or safe) to live in. The mainstream morality as shown by their police seems to be colored chicken-pink.

However, although officers witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday.

"For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent,' he said.

I propose a pro-war rally in their neighborhoods. I will bring the Apaches if you bring the Abrahms. It will be an earth-shattering good time! We could even enter into their houses on the premise of free speech and burn their French goods and German automobiles! I'm getting all tingly just thinking of the fun...

A girl who goes to school with my son lost both parents on 9-11. I cannot forget that day because altough I don't live in the city, I could see the smoke from my windows and the skyline that was once visible from the highway was desicrated. I lost many neighbors that day.

All day long I heard sirens that seemed to go off endlessly, and I will never forget the horror I felt when I saw the Pentagon was hit. I didn't know what would come next, and almost expected to see the Sears tower, the golden gate bridge and who knows what other targets they may have had in mind that day reduced to rubble.

I am no ivory tower scholar nor do I study worldview philosophy full time, but I am in Marketing and understand supply and demand economics. What I understand about the war in Iraq is this: Iraq has the supply and Al Queda has the demand to inflict on this country the harm that would make 9-11 small in comparison.

The anti-war protesters, the howling left and the Foreign Ministers who are opposing this war do not seem to grasp what to me is very obvious.

Those who gave the do-not-interfere order, whether the police captain on the spot or their higher-ups, should be brought up on federal civil rights charges.

One year ago, the world witnessed a unique kind of broadcasting -- the mass murder of thousands, live on television. As a lesson in the pitiless cruelty of the human race, September 11 was up there with Pol Pot's Mountain of Skulls in Cambodia, or the skeletal bodies stacked like garbage in the Nazi concentration camps.

An unspeakable act so cruel, so calculated and so utterly merciless that surely the world could agree on one thing - nobody deserves this fate. Surely there could be consensus: The victims were truly innocent, the perpetrators truly evil.

But to the world's eternal shame, 9/11 is increasingly seen as America's comeuppance. Incredibly, anti-Americanism has increased over the last year!

There has always been a simmering resentment to the USA in this country; too loud, too rich, too full of themselves, and so much happier than Europeans - but it has become an epidemic. And it seems incredible to me. More than that, it turns my stomach.

America is this country's greatest friend and our staunchest ally. We are bonded to the US by culture, language and blood. A little over half a century ago, around half a million Americans died for our freedoms, as well as their own. Have we forgotten so soon? And exactly a year ago, thousands of ordinary men, women and children -- not just Americans, but from dozens of countries -- were butchered by a small group of religious fanatics. Are we so quick to betray them?

What touched the heart about those who died in the Twin Towers and on the planes, was that we recognized them. Young fathers and mothers, somebody's son and somebody's daughter, husbands, wives, and children, some unborn.

And these people brought it on themselves?? Their nation is to blame for their meticulously planned slaughter?

These days you don't have to be some dust-encrusted nut job in Kabul or Karachi or Finsbury Park to see America as the Great Satan. The anti-American alliance is made up of self-loathing liberals who blame the Americans for every ill in the Third World, and conservatives suffering from power-envy, bitter that the world's only superpower can do what it likes without having to ask permission.

The truth is that America has behaved with enormous restraint since September 11!

Remember ... remember ... remember ... the gut-wrenching tapes of weeping men phoning their wives to say, "I love you," before they were burned alive.

Remember those people leaping to their deaths from the top of burning skyscrapers. Remember the hundreds of firemen buried alive.

Remember the smiling face of that beautiful little girl who was on one of the planes with her mum.

And realize that America has never retaliated for 9/11 in anything like the way it could have.

So a few al-Qaeda tourists got locked up without a trial in Camp X-ray? Pass the Kleenex ...

So some Afghan wedding receptions were shot up after they merrily fired their semi-automatics in a sky full of American planes? A shame, but maybe next time they should stick to confetti.

AMERICA could have turned a large chunk of the world into a parking lot. That it didn't is a sign of strength. American voices are already being raised against attacking Iraq -- that's what a democracy is for. How many in the Islamic world will have a minute's silence for the slaughtered innocents of 9/11? How many Islamic leaders will have the guts to say that the mass murder of 9/11 was an abomination?

When the news of 9/11 broke on the West Bank, those freedom-loving Palestinians were dancing in the street. America watched all of that -- and didn't push the button. We should thank the stars that America is the most powerful nation in the world. I still find it incredible that 9/11 did not provoke all-out war. Not a "war on terrorism." A real war!

The fundamentalist dudes are talking about "opening the gates of hell" if America attacks Iraq. Well, America could have opened the gates of hell like you wouldn't believe.

The US is the most militarily powerful nation that ever strode the face of the earth. The campaign in Afghanistan may have been less than perfect and the planned war on Iraq may be misconceived.

But don't blame America for not bringing peace and light to these wretched countries. How many democracies are there in the Middle East, or in the Muslim world? You can count them on the fingers of one hand -- assuming you haven't had any chopped off for minor shoplifting.

I love America, yet America is hated. I guess that makes me Bush's poodle.

But I would rather be a dog in New York City than a Prince in Riyadh. Above all, America is hated because it is what every country wants to be -- rich, free, strong, open, optimistic. Not ground down by the past, or religion, or some caste system. America is the best friend this country ever had and we should start remembering that.

Or do you really think the USA is the root of all evil? Tell it to the loved ones of the men and women who leaped to their death from the burning towers.

Tell it to the nursing mothers whose husbands died on one of the hijacked planes, or were ripped apart in a collapsing skyscraper. And tell it to the hundreds of young widows whose husbands worked for the New York Fire Department.

To our shame, George Bush gets a worse press than Saddam Hussein. Once we were told that Saddam gassed the Kurds, tortured his own people and set up rape-camps in Kuwait. Now we are told he likes Quality Street. Save me the orange center, Oh Mighty One!

Remember ... remember ... September 11. One of the greatest atrocities in human history was committed against America.

I don't see what the problem is with arresting the vandels... Remember kiddies, not all liberals are the same! Making liberals all the same (or conservatives, for that matter) is the first step to growing all-consuming, all-enveloping hatred for a group of people. The most moving thing I saw, that finally jerked me out of numb shock, was when coverage started of all the ordinary citizens that poured from every corner of NYC and the rest of the country to volunteer to dig, to do anything. (Where in the world would you find a relief organization having to say, enough! Thank you, but don't come - we are saturated with VOLUNTEERS? In America, that's where.) Then the camera panned around and there was an old black man who stood alone on the corner with a shovel he'd brought, waiting to be allowed into Ground Zero. It brought home to me the absolute LOVE carried in the hearts of Americans. Yes we are a new country (but the oldest democracy) but to me that's not an indictment - it's an explanation of why the love we carry in our hearts hasn't been burned into a miserable piece of charcoal soaked in bitter bile by generations and generations of the kind of oppression and genocide and unending civil war most other societies in this world have experienced. Love ourselves, America. Love ourselves. We need not excuse ourselves to anyone in the world.

A sad state of affairs indeed. And thoughtful posts here that clearly express something we can only hope that protesters may some day understand. I wondered on Sep 11 how long America could stand fast in the face of this attack. Then Dubya's speech with the "long time" and "you're with us or against us" lines. Still, I didn't know then whether to fully trust that or not. Was this posturing? Would he have the cajones to stick to it? And now 18 months later we press on. Our former allies say it's arrogant to demand that they be with us or against us? Okay, we understand, you're against us. Bummer. It didn't end when they finished the cleanup at WTC, and it won't be over when we clean up Iraq, either. Sorry to those of you who want "closure" and a "return to normalcy". Say what you will of our President, he has remained true to his word. Stay the course boss, let's roll.

A MESSAGE TO ALL ANTI-BUSHers from a peace-loving American.

Who in their right mind WANTS war?? None of us who support President Bush's actions WANT war. We DON'T want our boys and girls, men and women in harm's way. We DON'T want to put any Iraqi citizen in harm's way. We DON'T want to upset other countries. It's breaking our hearts that Saddam Hussein has left no other option and we pray hard, and we pray daily, that someone - anyone - will find the non-war solution... The entire UN with it's ARMY of diplomats, not one single nation's leader, not one single Bush protester, not one single religious leader - NO ONE has anything new or viable. Failing that - we pray that Saddam will give up. No luck there and not likely to be any. WHY don't you protest against Saddam and his evil henchmen?

To continue what you were saying, I will add this:

Those 9/11 victims did not choose to be on a terrorist flying bomb.
Those victims did not go to work expecting to be burned/crushed alive.
Those victims did not choose to jump 90 floors to their deaths when they got up that morning.
Those victims in the embassy bombings didn't know why they had to die that day.
The 17 sailors on the USS Cole were only going about their business and didn't expect a explosive filled zodiac to kill them.

All these victims had no choice in the outcome of that day, but onece those terrorists chose to complete those acts of lunacy and barbarism they chose their fate. Just as Yamamoto said "I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant" after the Pearl Harbor attack, the terrorists should have known that we would be a comin'.

They chose to start it, we have chosen to finish it and Iraq is part of the solution. Their leader chose a course of action and must now face the consequences. I just hope the Iraqis don't put up a fight and hand over the Iraqi leadership and let this war end without a lot of bloodshed.

Over here in our little speck of dirt (some even dare call it a country, haha !), many leftie politicians have joined the anti-American rabble. Some have publicly voiced the opinion that if America does go to war against Iraq, all American military bases should be forced to close, and all American soldiers should be forced to leave Belgium.

I wonder if that includes all those American soldiers who gave their life fighting for Belgium's freedom during 2 world wars. Just a brief reminder that neither the revolutionary war or the civil war was fought with words. The pioneers didn't win this land by carrying a dictionary in their holster either. There are countless examples when Americans stood up and fought...sometimes even each other.
