CNN Launches News Program for Iraqis

(2003-01-11) -- The Cable News Network (CNN) will produce a news program specifically for Iraqis. The show will include information about U.S. troop movements and previously secret U.S. intelligence operations.

A CNN editor got the idea for the hour-long program after CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr filed a report that U.S. military and intelligence agencies are secretly emailing Iraqi leaders encouraging them to dissent or defect.

Citing an unnamed source, Starr's report included the disclosure that The U.S. military and intelligence officials were apparently hoping that the Iraqis do not realize where the e-mails are coming from.

The unnamed editor said he suddenly realized that many Iraqis might have missed that story, but if they had a show all their own they could be up-to-date with "news they can use."

I bet the generals never saw the emails. Here's a typical general's inbox:

- Get free DVDs every month
- Help me. They cut my sons hands off and I have no
- Tired of sitting in your bunker with no women?
- Build your own JDAM jammer. Send $12.95 for plans you can build from Radio Shack parts
- We'll pay big money for you to surrender
- Enlarge your penis now!

"When asked whether she was actively traitorous or irredemably stupid, Starr answered 'Neither. I am irredemably traitorous and actively stupid. How do you like that, smart guy?'"

Maybe it was leaked to the reporter in hopes the Iraqi generals would read their email looking for their defection offer.
