LOTT: We Didn't Support Slave-Owning Prez
(2002-12-12) -- U.S. Senator Trent Lott, R-Miss., expressed pride today that "Mississippians didn't help elect that slave-holding scoundrel Thomas Jefferson."
"Mr. Jefferson's presidency began in 1800, and Mississippi didn't achieve statehood until Dec. 10, 1817," said Sen. Lott. "Therefore we didn't elect him, and the country would have been better off if the other states had followed our lead..in hindsight retroactively, of course."
Sen. Lott added that, "Senators from the first 16 states ought to be held accountable. Especially those who go around quoting Jefferson like he was someone to be admired."
