Baghdad Residents Don Gas Masks

(2003-04-09) -- Residents of Baghdad donned gas masks this morning when many simultaneously detected something strange in the air.

"I have never smelled anything like this. It was sweet and strong," said one local man. "I grabbed our family masks and made sure all the children and grandmother were protected."

After about 30 minutes, the masks began to come off around the city as word spread among the local citizens that the strange scent in the air was the smell of freedom mingled with the aroma of victory.

This is a great day. Although the war is clearly not over, this is the day when Baghdad began to feel free.

God bless those who have fought to bring this day about.

Ah hell, Scott. Never had sarcasm make me tear up before.

Posted by: datarat at April 9, 2003 07:54 AM

The other smell was the odor of the rotting of the effete republican guards.

Posted by: MIkey at April 9, 2003 08:43 AM

What can I say. Ditto datarat.

Now I know what to say:

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN!

Posted by: AHA at April 9, 2003 09:46 AM

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like...victory!"

Hope I got the quote right.

Did you see the old man on the street in baghdad holding up a big picture of sad dam and slapping the image in the face with a sandal while the younger Iraqi men were kicking sad dam in the face???? I hear shoe slapping is a huge insult to arabs. It brought a huge lump to my throat.

"Free at last, free at last! Thank God we are free at last!"

Posted by: ams at April 9, 2003 10:08 AM

And it sure smells better than the French!

Posted by: Darth Chef at April 9, 2003 10:20 AM

Thank God we got there while some of them still knew what freedom smelled like!

Posted by: DoktorI at April 9, 2003 10:23 AM

I hear Chirac is very upset about the Iraqis celebrating because it shows the war effort was right. He was quoted as saying "The Iraqi people have missed a good opportunity to stay quiet".

Posted by: Robb at April 9, 2003 11:14 AM

We do have something to be ashamed of.

How many people died who would be alive today if we hadn't listened to the UN in 1991 and helped the Iraqi people overthrow Saddam Hussein then?

We have blood on our hands, but it's not from what we've done in the last month. What we've done for the last 21 days is our way of saying, "we're sorry."

The UN is the one with the most blood on it's hand!

Good one Robb

Thanks Scott, although just thanks, doesn't seem enough! But thanks to your web site, and the need for a laugh, even when times are hard, leads me to believe, that there is still hope for America, when I see people that have the same beliefs that I do, in God and Country, and a thing called FREEDOM, that people today take for granted. May God Bless You and Your Family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The US troops in Iraq have now joined the proud tradition of American soldiers fighting selflessly to secure freedom for oppressed people, beginning with the American Revolution and continuing today on the streets of Baghdad. They are the brightest and the best and will all come home heroes.

I love George Bush Sr., but the failure to remove Saddam in 1991 was the second worst foreign policy mistake of the last 30 years. (Clinton's failure to wipe out the Taliban was the worst.)

However, Bush Sr's failure did teach us a very important lesson: Never, NEVER, rely on the United Nations for anything.

Another example of what happens when the UN gets involved - from today's WSJ

Recall that, under a U.N. resolution, U.S. troops restored "democracy" to Haiti during the Clinton years by removing military coup-leader Raoul Cedras. Jean Bertrand Aristide, who had been democratically elected, was returned to power. After six months of U.S. military presence, Mr. Clinton declared the effort a "remarkable success" and turned the reconstruction over to U.N. peace-keepers.

It's been downhill ever since. The source of the problem is clearly Mr. Aristide himself, who likes absolute power as much as the country's legendary Duvalier dictators. Washington knew what Mr. Aristide is made of, but the Haitian strongman used a combination of Haitian public funds, leftist rhetoric and the race card to win support from Mr. Clinton.

The U.N. stood by and watched it all happen, notwithstanding its good intentions. When the Senate elections were stolen in May 2000 by Mr. Aristide's Lavalas Party, even the optimists began throwing in the towel. In January 2001 the U.N. closed its Haiti mission and full-blown anarchy took over. Violence against Mr. Aristide's political opponents is now commonplace, judges and journalists are harassed and many have had to flee the country. We doubt the U.S. and its allies could do any worse in Iraq.

Scott, I don't know you but thanks so much for this site. The posts got me through a rough patch, and hopefully you will continue to keep your porch light on here. Now about the comments....ROFLMSO. And learning something. You are the best. Thanks for the links and the support. Without you I would not have been able to debate this issue as successfully as I have...

Thank you.

I am moved by the faces I see smelling the fresh scent of freedom... it is not without cost, and that is something that they all understand too well.

APRIL 9 2003

TO ALL THOSE WHO OPPOSED

We have seen their kind before. They're the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism.

And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.

I have one more thing to add to Tom's post about the UN:

As you may have read my earlier posts on this site, I was a Scout in 7th Corps in Desert Storm. I was on Checkpoint Zulu, protecting Shi'a refugees after the war. I remember promising them safety, and I clearly remember the horrible things I witnessed the wonderful Iraqi people suffering. And I also remember the feelings of loss and outrage when we were pulled back and sent home.

Now, as I watch the faces of the truly liberated, and hear the bitterness of the Iraqis against the French and Germans, I reflect in pride and shame. I am overwhelmingly proud to be an American today. And I am ashamed that I am not there to help.

And bless all of you that post here. I know that my 22 years in the Army were in the service of a very deserving nation. Time well spent.

Scott: Are you quite sure that the strange scent in the air, you know, the one that prompted the people of Bagdhad to take off their gas masks, wasn't the vapor trail left by Peter Arnett getting out of Dodge?
