U.S. Cuts Korean Oil Shipments, France Cuts Cheese

(2002-11-14) -- U.S. President George Bush decided Wednesday to end oil shipments to North Korea unless the Communist regime dismantles its nuclear weapons program.

French President Jacques Chirac, in a rare show of solidarity with the U.S., said his nation will halt shipments of La Vache Qui Rit cheese to North Korea.

"If America cuts the oil shipments," said Mr. Chirac, "the least we can do is cut the cheese. We have aired our differences in the Security Council, now we come together to combat this nuclear threat. Silence on this issue could be deadly."

Are they going to be 'cheesed'!

Note carefully: France did NOT cut off shipments of either Courvoisier or Remy Martin cognac, both favored by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il.

As always, the French are making a grand rhetorical gesture, and leaving the activity of maintaining peace in the world to the hyperpower (and then grousing about it!)

I think we can rest assured that the stink Chirac is raising isn't just hot air. A unilateral response from the US would light a match to an already volatile situation, that could backfire and cause severe internal damage to the European body politic.
