Torricelli Sued by Campaign Contributors

(2002-10-02) -- A class action lawsuit was filed today in a New Jersey court against Sen. Robert Torricelli for breach of contract. The plaintiffs, a anonymous group of business people, had all made significant contributions to Sen. Torricelli's re-election campaign.

The suit alleges that Torricelli will no longer be able to keep the promises he made to the plaintiffs. It requests that the court award them the return of thousands of dollars in goods and services, plus punitive damages of "whatever's left in the campaign fund."

"Senator Torricelli made a verbal contract with my clients," said the attorney who filed the suit. "He broke that contract when he ended his bid for office. He owes us...I mean them...my clients, that is."

Careful...this one almost seems plausible....

I seem to remember the Republican voters in Vermont tried to sue "Jumpin'" Jim Jeffords for campaign funds after he left the GOP.

I do not know what came of the suit, but the precident has been set.

I think it would be neat to sue the faithless bastards into the poorhouse. Bring on the "lawyer clowns!" What a beautiful three ring circus that would make.

In Louisiana, we already have a refined version of this in progress: see story in The Advocate, the daily newspaper in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
