(2003-05-20) — Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s public service announcements urging fiscal responsibility are so hot, the 77-year-old Fed boss may get his own call-in talk radio show.
Best known for his periodic marathon lectures to Congressional committees, Mr. Greenspan has been head of the Fed since the John Quincy Adams administration.
“The study of economics has been the purview of an elite subset of intellectuals,” said Mr. Greenspan. “I want to, as they say, take it to the streets. Soon every truck driver, housewife and homeboy will be chattering about Ayn Rand, GDP, money supply, the discount rate and supply-side theories.”
“When people understand economic theory,” he said, “They’ll make wise decisions with money. My experience with Congress notwithstanding, I think I’m the man to make economics an over-the-counter product.”
Mr. Greenspan then tried out some his on the air ‘patter’ with a reporter: “I am the emperor of econ, headmaster of the Greenspan Instititute for Arcane Monetary Studies, and everybody’s loveable fiduciary fuzzball…Step aside Mr. Limbaugh.”
The chairman acknowledged he’s in talks with Westwood One and Premier for syndication rights.
Because of ongoing back pain, Mr. Greenspan will conduct the entire three-hour broadcast from his bathtub, where he now does most of his study. There are no plans for a television version of the show.
