(2003-03-15) — The general secretary of the National Council of Churches officially demoted God today, and replaced Him with “world opinion.”
In a Reuters story, the Rev. Bob Edgar said, “My hope is that on Monday morning the (Bush) administration will realize there are two superpowers in the world: the United States and world opinion. They haven’t convinced the world there is a smoking gun.“
A spokesman for God said it was not the first time that the Deity had been spurned or ignored by religious leaders.
The Almighty has also pointed out that guns don’t smoke until after they’re fired, and he suggested finding and eliminating the weapons in Iraq that had not yet been discharged.
