(2010-07-08) — The White House today announced a bold new program consistent with NASA’s top priority to help Muslims “feel good about their historic contribution in science and math and engineering,” as the space agency’s chief, Charles Bolden, recently told al Jazeera TV.
Echoing the words of President John F. Kennedy in March of 1961, President Barack H. Obama told a joint session of Congress, “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal of landing a Muslim on the Moon, and returning him safely to Earth using only Muslim technology.”
According to Mr. Bolden, NASA engineers are already “close to testing” a solid rocket booster powered by combustible animal dung, and operated according to principles discovered by Ibn Al-Haytham, Islam’s best-known scientist, who died in 1039 A.D..
While President Kennedy put a 10-year deadline on his moon-landing challenge, President Obama said he hopes to achieve this new daring goal “before the millennium is out.”
Meanwhile, the chief researcher at Yemen’s Muslim World University welcomed the president’s announcement, and offered his colleagues’ assistance in “targeting the moon landing so that the Muslim astronaut could plant the flag of Islam precisely on the lower tip of the lunar crescent, offering him a clear view of that really big star.”

"combustible animal dung" indeed
Green technology at it's finest. Finally, a truly renewable resource!
Funny stuff Scott!

Yikes! …"a solid rocket booster powered by combustible animal dung"? That sounds more dangerous than anything NASA has used to date. I'll bet it's powerful though.

"Only occasionally" in the sense that an IED "only" goes off, killing whoever, maybe 2-3 times a day, every day.
McVeigh and Nichols did not use dung, by the way, they used ammonium nitrate.
Interesting that you would consider them "wildly successful," did you cheer wildly on April 19, 1995 when you heard the news? Were you aware that they were reacting to what your hero, the 42nd President of the United States, had done?

Whoa, Scott! Scott Johnson of powerlineblog has linked to your piece. The amazing point of his blog post is that none-that is, zero- of the major media have mentioned the idiocy of the ObaMao "outreach to Muslims" plan of NASA, according to Byron York.

Are we sure that Muslims want to feel proud about their historic achievements in science? I mean, in more than a general way? They are certainly interested in the past glories of Islamic culture – miltary, architectural, legal, medical – but science and technology in particular? Not especially, that I can see. Western culture prizes science and technology. The only interest I see the Muslims taking in science and technology is in learning how to build things that explode – up to and including nuclear weapons.
31 ChileSerrano // Jul 9, 2010 at 3:34 am
Now, if they really wanted to feel proud about their involvement in these areas, there are certainly steps they they could take without any help from us. For instance - how about if the Saudis directed the enormous sums they currently spend on madrassas toward a real educational system, that would instruct young Muslims in things like math and science, not just rote memorization of the Qu’ran? Local authorities, on the other hand, could make an effort to protect young female students (and their teachers) from attacks by roving barbarians, who throw acid in the women’s faces to deter them from the “un-Islamic” behavior of trying to educate themselves.
I could go on, but I think the areas I’ve mentioned would at least be a good place to start …

Ab? ?Al? al-?asan ibn al-?asan ibn al-Haytham.
Despite his bourgeois handle, he was the greatest thing since goat-hair tents according to Wikipedia. He was the seed of all great thinkers, past-present-future, except Muhammad, of course.
His claim to fame [such as it is] is that he, alone among all mankind, remained unhindered by the dark ages; therefore, he was [for the sake of all mankind] burdened with furthering all sciences simultaneously. Looking in his eyes it is evident that he took this grave responsibility in stride.
Taking all of this to its logical conclusion, a flaw in the premise presents itself which can only be described as my strong suspicion that, in reality, they are simply envious of what they claim to loathe. The irony is so ironic, it's ironic. Why haven't Muslims already been exploring outer space for the last 900 or so years? Just asking.

Perhaps you have a point. I guess it would be a lot to ask, if we expected the Muslims to transition from the seventh century to the twenty-first century in one enormous leap. Still, I wasn’t suggesting that they change every aspect of their culture – just their legal penalties for “adultery” (as well as their standards of “proof” for that offense – I’m not sure a “confession” obtained by the infliction of 99 lashes is sufficiently credible evidence to justify a death penalty). I’m not demanding that they abandon capital pushment, as the Europeans have – I am merely saying that I think death by stoning is, well – a medieval punishment. If the twenty-first century is a trek too far, I won’t criticize if they need to take a rest stop after they get to the fifteenth century.

38 MoMadeMeDoIt // Jul 9, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Just to make myself clear, that ‘/s’ there is what some of us call a ‘sarc tag’. We use them to make it absolutely clear to readers that what we’ve just been saying is not necessarily meant to be taken as completely serious. Often, we don’t bother to mark our posts that way when we think it’s pretty obvious that we’re being sarcastic. It’s a bit like a joke that you have to explain. At the end of the day, you either get the joke, or you don’t. An explanation may make the joke easier to understand, but you probably still won’t think that it’s funny.

40 JamesonLewis3rd // Jul 9, 2010 at 5:32 pm
My designation, if I used one, would be [snark] (the "snark tag"). Sarcasm is not my forte. I'm dead serious and logical on a consistent basis.
[Tangent]
Bobbie's puerile, sarcastic response to a legitimate question would send up a red flag for "The Mentalist." Gibbs' renowned spasmodic, jerking gesticulations would send negative signals to that "Lie to Me" guy. My own impression is that he is filled with a contemptuous hatred straight from hell and is barely able to restrain himself from spitting on someone, anyone.
[/Tangent]
My comments are usually the ravings of a madman; therefore, the presence or absence of a certified snark designation has no significance.

JL3: There have been a number of remarkable Muslim historical figures in the fields of philosophy and the sciences. One was the Persian polymath Avicenna (Abu Ali Sina); one of his books (The Canon of Medicine) was used as a standard medical text as recently as the eighteenth century. Another was the philosopher Averroes.
The problem is, Islamic culture does not seem to be fertile ground for such men to arise from — and that has been truer & truer with the passage of time.

Hey JL3,That's why alarm bells would have sounded in Beijing on June 28 when the Tomahawk-laden 560-ft. U.S.S. Ohio popped up in the Philippines' Subic Bay. More alarms were likely sounded when the U.S.S. Michigan arrived in Pusan, South Korea, on the same day. And the Klaxons would have maxed out as the U.S.S. Florida surfaced, also on the same day, at the joint U.S.-British naval base on Diego Garcia, a flyspeck of an island in the Indian Ocean. In all, the Chinese military awoke to find as many as 462 new Tomahawks deployed by the U.S. in its neighborhood. "There's been a decision to bolster our forces in the Pacific," says Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "There is no doubt that China will stand up and take notice
It's not our fault they can"t get it up…..
