Apparently there was a Q & A during the president's talk to students. Mark Knoller wonders whether the eight-year-old asking about health care was a plant. (Or did his teacher pre-coach the youngster about questions to ask, I wonder)

good grief, did someone actually ask about health care? that'll be the death knell for any hope that this could be seen as encouraging rather than political.

and, I'm guessing he unveiled his overarching plan for a master race today as well. been wondering when that'd finally come up and then when he announced this speech I though for sure it'd be today. guess i'll have to go home and watch the news…they'll mention that if it happened…even if they are "puppets"…wouldn't they?

  • 4 boberinyetagain // Sep 8, 2009 at 8:36 pm

To address your question directly…probably more of a mineral than vegetable (the 8 y/o kid)

  • 5 onlineanalyst // Sep 8, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Responding in hyperbole again? Reducing the observation to the absurd?

Tell me what eight-year-olds you know who are concerned about "universal health care," the kid's own words?

I thought that the point of the "pep talk" was how to succeed in school. But I guess it was nothing more than another staged photo-op and campaign.

For Obamao, "all the world's a stage," and he's the ONLY playuh.

  • 6 boberinyetagain // Sep 8, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Wasn't kidding…that question ruined it…no doubt about it. Changed the whole deal in one fell swoop.

Really, not kidding, hate that the question was asked, can hope it wasn't answered but fear that it was….

  • 7 boberinyetagain // Sep 8, 2009 at 8:52 pm

hope I was kidding about the master race thing too, that's supposed to be a secret…naturally

look what happened when GHW Bush made a similar talk
When Bush spoke to students, Democrats investigated, held hearings
    By: Byron York
    Chief Political Correspondent
    09/08/09 7:11 AM EDT
The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech — they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.
Unlike the Obama speech, in 1991 most of the controversy came after, not before, the president's school appearance. The day after Bush spoke, the Washington Post published a front-page story suggesting the speech was carefully staged for the president's political benefit. "The White House turned a Northwest Washington junior high classroom into a television studio and its students into props," the Post reported.
With the Post article in hand, Democrats pounced. "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," said Richard Gephardt, then the House Majority Leader. "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"
Democrats did not stop with words. Rep. William Ford, then chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate the cost and legality of Bush's appearance. On October 17, 1991, Ford summoned then-Education Secretary Lamar Alexander and other top Bush administration officials to testify at a hearing devoted to the speech. "The hearing this morning is to really examine the expenditure of $26,750 of the Department of Education funds to produce and televise an appearance by President Bush at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, DC," Ford began. "As the chairman of the committee charged with the authorization and implementation of education programs, I am very much interested in the justification, rationale for giving the White House scarce education funds to produce a media event."
Unfortunately for Ford, the General Accounting Office concluded that the Bush administration had not acted improperly. "The speech itself and the use of the department's funds to support it, including the cost of the production contract, appear to be legal," the GAO wrote in a letter to Chairman Ford. "The speech also does not appear to have violated the restrictions on the use of appropriations for publicity and propaganda."
That didn't stop Democratic allies from taking their own shots at Bush. The National Education Association denounced the speech, saying it "cannot endorse a president who spends $26,000 of taxpayers' money on a staged media event at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, D.C. — while cutting school lunch funds for our neediest youngsters."
Lost in all the denouncing and investigating was the fact that Bush's speech itself, like Obama's today, was entirely unremarkable. "Block out the kids who think it's not cool to be smart," the president told students. "If someone goofs off today, are they cool? Are they still cool years from now, when they're stuck in a dead end job. Don't let peer pressure stand between you and your dreams.

the negative reaction of us right wing kooks to Obama was much more benign and sympathetic!

  • 9 WhizBang // Sep 8, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Somebody needs to get out there and point out the importance of education and not dropping out of school before graduating. I don't see anyone else around who can get people's attention doing it, including you right wingers who are making a lot of noise about Obama bringing up the subject.

We also need someone of substance to get out there and talk about the importance of eating healthy. We are fast becoming a nation of fat slobs. Just sit in a mall and watch the humungus rear ends or the big fat beer bellies bouncing by. No wonder our health costs are skyrocketing out of sight. And when you see the percentage of this group who are young kids ..

  • 10 onlineanalyst // Sep 8, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Cannot local school districts do the motivating to stay in school and study? Most of them have an assembly at least once a year with a speaker who can relate to the students?

As far as eating healthy is concerned, again health and phys. ed. classes, as well as home ec (Family and Consumer Education) classes address these issues. The latter teach kids not only how to eat healthily but to shop wisely and prepare meals from scratch. Junk foods and fast foods are some of the most uneconomic ways to satisfy hunger. If you teach a youngster in such a class the many ways that there are to prepare a simple item as an egg, for example, the student learns self-reliance, good nutrition, and budget strategies. Why should the federal government take on further nannyism?

Do we need a president to do what a teacher, the school nurse, or a motivational speaker can accomplish in a more personal setting?

Too bad it was in conjunction with his advice on "What to say if someone near you sneezes."

  • 13 gafisher // Sep 9, 2009 at 10:18 am

The prepared "lesson plans" make it clear Obama did not give the speech which had been planned. The Administration was forced by public opinion to replace its previously prepared and no doubt carefully rehearsed presentation with something more in line with the sentiments of a majority of Americans, a speech which was downright conservative in tone.

This was a lose-lose-lose situation for the fast-failing President. He was prevented from giving the intended indoctrination speech; constrained by pride to replace rather than cancel the event; and found himself instead promoting a good deal of the concept of personal responsibility almost diametrically opposed to his personal and Party politics. Conservatism won this round; Obama is on the ropes and the whole world knows it.

  • 14 boberinyetagain // Sep 9, 2009 at 12:58 pm

on the contrary, the whole world now has a smidgen of respect that was totally lacking for 8 long years. i'll take a smidgen over zero, that's moving in the right direction. We are not operating in a vacuum. the list of things that the world surpasses us in growns longer every day. education is the foundation for moving back towards the light.

So, because the speech was actually a good one, with an apparently "approved" message…it HAD to have been changed eh? Now that's funny!

  • 15 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 2:17 pm

My burning question to you is, how did you get such a long post to "post" without splitting it up?

BTW, I agree with your post.

  • 16 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Even Obama ADMITTED they changed the speech, but that will never stop left wing kooks from defending ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he does.

Yes, education USED to be a VERY GOOD thing, until the libs took the entire education system over to indoctrinate ALL school children.

  • 17 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Since some people are completely blind about ANYTHING Obama does. Convince us that he IS actually holding his hand over his heart while the National Anthem was playing in the avitar picture of mine.

C'mon, I just want to hear another lame excuse. ;-)

  • 18 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 2:30 pm

You are right that "O" is on the ropes. In fact, my bet is if he cannot cram ObamaCare down our throats, his own party will be trying to get rid of him, or at least marginalize him.

Don't think they don't see he is grabbing more power for the Executive Branch and marginalizing the Legislative one. Even Robt (KKK) Byrd sees that FACT!

  • 19 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Didn't I hear that either Obama's health department or education department was going to instruct citizens the "proper way" to sneeze now?

If you don't comply, homeland security will get involved and call out the ACORN jackboot squad.

    Good article Chile!

I especially liked the quote from Mary Mitchell, "Although the Obama administration has bent over backward trying to gain the acceptance of distrustful whites, so far it isn't happening."

I somehow missed that, "bending over backward for distrusting whitey". When did that happen?

I DID however see him bend over frontward for that Saudi Prince! :-)

  • 24 boberinyetagain // Sep 9, 2009 at 3:26 pm

why on earth would there be "distrustful whites"?
I can see "distrustful people"…but how does the "white" thing figure in?
and why should anyone have to bend at all to prevent distrust. You can earn distrust but to have it coming in seems silly, especially if it's due to what color you/the audience is…

  • 25 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 3:30 pm

It is called RESPECT for the banner representing ones Country. A banner that brave men have died to protect.

Of course America hating libs like Obama and the sheep that blindly support him wouldn't know about RESPECT for our flag.

Sheesh, you really love "pomp and circumstance" eh? Do you still tip your hat to the ladies as you pass? I would hope so.

  • 31 boberinyetagain // Sep 9, 2009 at 3:46 pm

and why is it that everything that hints of disagreement with your narrow thinking is labeled as "slanted"?
Isn't it possible that many (dare I say most) people just see things differently, don't share your opinion? That doesn't make their view "slanted" any more than yours…either both views are off kilter or neither is…get over it

  • 32 RAM1 // Sep 9, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Everytime something is said about Obama, you bring it back to Bush.

    How old are you anyway?

I guess that is not a fair question seeing as how ALL liberals do the same thing.

If you plan on listening to Obama's latest sales pitch tonight, keep this in mind —

    Listening to a Liar .

The most important thing about what anyone says are not the words themselves but the credibility of the person who says them.

The words of convicted swindler Bernie Madoff were apparently quite convincing to many people who were regarded as knowledgeable and sophisticated. If you go by words, you can be led into anything.

  • 49 gafisher // Sep 9, 2009 at 5:21 pm

"The CNN co-host says that he doesn't see ANY negative emails from viewers."

I recall a meeting at which the Chairman, ignoring a forest of raised hands, tried to declare a controversial issue approved with the words "Hearing no opposition …" Oh, yeah, he heard it all right. Then there were the Congressional Democrats who tried to ignore the storm of negative reactions from the public in their so-called "Town Hall" meetings, and the AARP leaders to whom dissenting members were invisible (just before tens of thousands of them vanished for real — from the rolls). Just because a CNN host doesn't see negative emails doesn't mean they're not there.

Muslims Widely Seen as Facing Discrimination .

Eight years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Americans see Muslims as facing more discrimination inside the U.S. than other major religious groups. Nearly six-in-ten adults (58%) say that Muslims are subject to a lot of discrimination, far more than say the same about Jews, evangelical Christians, atheists or Mormons.

    But . . .

Fewer Americans see Islam as violent, poll finds .

Thirty-eight percent of those polled believed Islam was more likely than other faiths to encourage violence, down from the 45 percent who held this view two years earlier.

So, what could be the problem ? Why the negative image of Islam ? Must be those right-wingers tarring the image of The Religion of Peace ! Right ?

The fact that you don't seem to realize that both people you're looking for (importance of education person and importance of eating healthy person) were once called parents suggests that the longtime and ongoing liberal (leftist) effort to dumbdown our educational system is succeeding beyond their fondest hopes.

Expect more of the same if the dems manage to pass national health care. I can hear their rallying cry already, "Let's do for our health care system what we've already done for our education system!!!" And the lickspittles in the sycophant media and ignorant teeming masses will weep with joy at the very thought. God help us all.

Sarah PalinM/a> put up a short response to BHO's historic speech on Facebook. This is the best part:

One last thing: after President Obama's speech tonight, listen for which pundits use the words "false", "scary", and "risky" in describing the proposals I put forward. That's how you'll be able to tell who the White House counted as "allies" worthy of receiving its talking points.

It depends on what that "EDUCATION" that is being given is, wouldn't it?

When my granddaughter opens a science book and the first few words STATE AS FACT, "millions of years ago" when I have taught my children the Earth is only about 6,000 years old, I do NOT call that "EDUCATION", I call that INDOCTRINATION!

AND, that is only one of MANY< MANY examples!

My bet is that PARTISAN speech, (that was filled with fear mongering and flat out lies), will drop his approval ratings even lower, close to what we see the trolls here have.

What you are going to hear this 'troll' say, is that it is a pretty sad state of affairs in our country when the hatemongering shows its ugly head inside Congress when a President is making an address.

The level of disrespect in this country is really reaching into the depths.

  • 89 onlineanalyst // Sep 10, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Identifying Obamao's latest cooked numbers as a lie is "hatemongering"? What alternative universe do you live in? Your faux outrage is telling.

Do you recall the boos that W's adversaires called out when he addressed a joint session of Congress re revamping the near-to-collapsing Social Security Ponzi scheme?

  • 91 boberinyetagain // Sep 10, 2009 at 1:26 pm

“Instead of honest debate, we have seen scare tactics.” ~ Barack Obama (9-9-2009)

“Everyone in this room knows what will happen if we do nothing. Our deficit will grow. More families will go bankrupt. More businesses will close. More Americans will lose their coverage when they are sick and need it most. And more will die as a result.” ~ Barack Obama (9-9-2009)

Why do people continue to talk about the "Obama plan"? Until there are specific proposals on a sheet of paper (more like many many many sheets of paper) that can be analysed, fact-checked, cost-projected by the CBO etc., it isn't a plan, it's a wish list — a sales pitch — a campaign speech. Which, BTW, is why Obama has never submitted legislative proposals to Congress. It's called "plausible deniability".

Oh, no, my plan won't pay for abortion!

What plan? Where is the language - in a proposed bill - that does what you claim? Oh, no, we don't write bills! The Congress will write the bill —

What will my plan mean to you? My plan will mean lots & lots & lots of cake, and ice cream, and chocolate candy — and it will all be FREE! FREE! FREE! How, you ask ? ! ? Don't you trust me ? ! ? Didn't I just say so ?

  • 98 onlineanalyst // Sep 10, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Powerlineblog's John Hinderaker does a nice job fisking the oily claims, half-truths, and outright lies in Obamao's speech to the joint session of Congress:
    http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2009/09/024...

BTW Joe Wilson was correct in calling out Obamao's statement about coverage for illegals a lie. While he may not have followed the protocols of parliamentary procedure, he did apologize. Obamao, however, claimed that opposition to the bill under discussion- HR3200, although it's anyone's guess what it is since the features change from hour to hour-is "a lie." As president, he, too should be held to protocols of pariamentary procedure. He may have the bully pulpit, but that does not permit him to act like a bully.

I think we agree, RAM1, in that we both hold the word "Education" to the high standard of "the imparting of knowledge." What welfare schools offer today is heavily biased toward a mix of amusement, indoctrination, and outright untruth.

Regarding your example, nothing and nobody has yet proved that anything in the Bible as it was written is untrue, and I believe that spotless record will stand until the end.

Both are true, UNL, and related — what could be sicker than to think an attack on one's neighbors, one's fellow citizens, isn't "close to home." Terrorism seldom targets an individual; the WTC attack, the Lockerbie bombing, and all the rest were aimed as surely at you and me — and even Bober — as at those who were killed.

The two polls are in agreement, M³DI, which is no surprise considering that both poll the same population and identify the same sentiment. Neither result is based on any measurement of crimes committed either toward or by the subject group; rather, in both cases, all they (and we) have to go on are the opinions of people who are apparently not even in the subject group.

In reality, the first poll doesn't report on a negative image of Islam, but of the respondents' negative image of other Americans, while the second reports on the respondents' positive image of themselves.

Of course this was years ago and things may not be the same as back in the old days, but when I went to school I was assigned to a team of advisers who seemed to work ceaselessly both to motivate me and to ensure I ate properly and practiced good hygiene. As I recall, most, maybe even all, of the kids I went to school with had much the same support. I can't think of any reason why the current Administration doesn't try to revive this somewhat old-fashioned by effective system — why, most of these teams even met the standards for gender diversity!

I remember them well — in fact, one still checks up on me from time to time. I always called her "Mom" and still respect both her and her partner, since deceased, whom I called "Dad."
