Poll: Uncommitted See Obama as Most Like Them

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 57 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2008-09-27) — In the wake of the first presidential debate between Senators John McCain and Barack Obama, a CBS news poll of uncommitted voters shows that those who can’t make up their minds find more in common with Sen. Obama.

“People tend to gravitate toward the candidate who seems most like them,” said an unnamed pollster at CBS. “And we’re starting to see a shift, at least a tentative one, among those who have difficulty making decisions. To the uncommitted, Obama looks like a fellow traveler.”

About 39 percent of the respondents in the CBS-Knowledge Networks poll, who remain undecided after nearly two years of presidential campaigning, said they thought Sen. Obama won the debate, compared with 24 percent who picked Sen. McCain as the winner, and 37 percent who just couldn’t decide.

“Obama hit the right notes for these people,” the pollster said. “The way he cocks his head to the side as if perplexed, his frequent interjection of non-verbal sounds, and his ability to speak for long stretches without definitively declaring what he believes…all of this appeals to the uncommitted.”

On the other hand, the lower percentage who thought Sen. McCain won reflects the fact that “the uncommitted just can’t relate to people who know what they believe and don’t hesitate to say it.”

“Of course,” the pollster added, “Sen. McCain could also benefit from the fact that uncommitted voters will spend most, if not all, of election day trying to decide whether to go to the polls.”

“In the wake of the first presidential debate …”

Ah, nothing like a good Irish Wake.

These “debates” are useless. There are no truly “uncommitted” voters, both sides always claim victory, and the people who watch or listen only do so to cheer for their candidate.

I absolutely love this. I just laughed myself silly. My favorite part was “the uncommitted just can’t relate to people who know what they believe and don’t hesitate to say it.”

I visit with a lot of liberals and they are truly committed to their liberalism, but lately, I seem to be running into a lot of people who are totally enamored with the Oblahblah’s looks, flourishes, rockstar quality and actually, his arrogance, but do not have a clue what he stands for. They hear the word “change” and just swoon. It is scary.

Venezuelans were enamored with Chavez’s “Change” too. Look what they got.

The brilliance of this post lies in the phrase “…..undecided after nearly two years of presidential campaigning…..” because it sorta makes me wonder if they even exist except as a hypothetical, statistical label as opposed to a significant portion of real, live people.

I mean, really: Undecided? Snap out of it.

I watched 90% of the so-called “debate” and I was proud of the way Senator John Sidney McCain III repeatedly body-slammed his stammering opponent while bobbing, weaving and laughing off BO’s feeble thrusts, jabs and pokes.

    There wasn’t anything else on…..

  • 5 Ms RightWing, Ink // Sep 27, 2008 at 9:00 am

I felt the debate was rather long and most Americans who were raised on 5 second sound bites became lost in the words and turned to staring at the debaters with glossed over eyes.

They coached McCain to not lose his cool. I think he should have dropped kicked Big O right into the audience.

While McCain was trying to find a settlement for the disaster our country is in Obama was getting talking points to make himself look good to the masses of ignorant who think more money is the answer. Chinese money if neccesary

He, OB1, couldn’t think of one specific thing he would slash when entering office. I loved when McCain ripped into him over HillaryCare. Of course that name is no longer used.

I think the debate was boring since the liberal lies were smoothed over so no sound bites would be played for the next month. Period. End of thought.

I wish this were funny… It is but not when you realize that its true..

How can we get these idiots to not go to the polls?

    McCain SHOULD have gotten mad..

Obama says HE warned of fanny mae? McCain missed the chance to say — why the F did they give YOU so much money?

On point by point, Obama got a message past — it was a total lie — but he got it out…

sadly for these “undecideds” that’s ALL that MATTERS. Both Obama and McCain have their “solids” (voters not waste) and its time to trick the stupid idiots that have not decided.

McCains got to point out that Obama IS pee-lo-see — Obama IS Dodd Obama IS Barney Frank.. Obama IS Mertha

McCain was not prepared for the fight last night, sadly because he was trying to get a bill passed that will now be known as our “Red Revolution”

Soon you will have Sept 26th off each year from your GOVERNMENT job as a Nurse or Banker, Roofer or Fast Food Restaurant worker — as decreed by the NEW central government.

You will be standing in the cold watching a train speed by with Czar Obama on it- it will remind you of a scene Dr Zhivago — if you dont know what I’m saying — go watch the movie before Feb 2 when your TV goes black (now you figure you dont need that converter box because you can aford cable)

But THEN you will realize you can’t afford cable because you had to buy those new LIGHT BULBS

  • 10 Hawkeye // Sep 27, 2008 at 10:04 am

    Good morning all…

The two candidates have very clear and opposing viewpoints. If people are still “undecided” after nearly 2 years of campaigning, then it’s because: a) they have no strong principled values, b) they are not paying attention, c) they are not interested, or d) they are very cynical about politics.

For a “political junkie” such as myself, I find the “undecideds” really irritating. They wait ’til the last minute to make up their mind and they can make or break an election. I mean, think about it. One candidate will win because the people who finally put him in office are the ones who don’t care, don’t pay attention, don’t have any core values, and/or very cynical about the whole process.

    D’OH!

    BTW, good one Scott!

This satire would be hilarious EXCEPT it is too true! Liberals, and “secular progressives” DO in fact have a tough time making up their minds, or else they would be literally, ON THEIR KNEES, asking JESUS CHRIST to forgive them with all the sign of HIS coming again!

I really liked Scott’s line, “The way he cocks his head to the side as if perplexed, -”

I have seen this MANY times with O’Bama. It reminds me of when you make a strange sound, the look your dig gives you!

If the Big “O” becomes our 44th Prez, I sure hope he has decorum and dignity enough when taking to other Counties leaders, NOT to interrupt them as he did McCain.

That works, (I guess), for Alan Colmes), but not for the “supposed” leader of the free world!

Then again, maybe under an O’Bama regime, we may NOT be “free” very long?

Scott, once again, absolutely NAILS it!

I watched most of the debate, and had a screaming headache by the end of it (my head was screaming probably because I kept screaming at BO). He kept on and on and on breaking the first rule of debating that I learned in 8th grade: when your turn is over and it’s your opponent’s turn to talk, you SHUT UP!!!!!!!! He did it more times than I could count and it was beyond annoying and RUDE! I heard Lehrer say “one at a time please” only once. ARRRRRRGGGGHHH!

It is a new day here at the bunker. After 38 years of shooting with a Nikon 35 mm I have now took a deep breath and moved over to a Cannon EOS Rebel XSi. I felt somewhat dirty, like cheating on my spouse, but now that I have used digital, my Nikon film camera may be moved to my museum of useless artifacts.

It came by me rather accidentally since the Nikon I wanted was $1,200, so to do some digital work I bought a small but nice Cannon digital point and shoot camera at K-Mart. I figured this would work since my Nikon has encountered difficulties and nobody has parts for the old beast.

After I looked up the reviews on the little camera I discovered Sears sold the Cannon SLR style digital camera so I hitched a ride and asked for an upgrade and to make it nice I have two years, no interest payments. I also upgraded the lens to a 55 to 250 zoom, keeping the 30 to 55 mm that came with the camera.

I am really happy and surprised at the imagery, even under magnification. It will take a few days to absorb all the ins and outs but my cameras are my life so I guess that is why I am spreading the news.

When I get a few good shots I will have a photo show at the Cafe.

Ms RW… “but now that I have used digital, my Nikon film camera may be moved to my museum of useless artifacts.”

  • 26 mindknumbed kid // Sep 27, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Cannon EOS Rebel XSi,eh? We are looking at one of those for my youngest daughter who is 17 today, if she wants to go halvies on it she may have one by tonight. Hopefully she will pursue her photographic interests better than she has her violin interests. She took some piano lessons but now just plays everything by ear, which is useful because we only need the lyrics and tune and she figures out the notes herself.
I didn’t watch the debate, pretty much a waste of time, no matter how good Obama could do,and how poorly McCain might have done, the MSM would praise the One, while there is only one intelligent choice to make. Did Oblahma really say that he warned us about Fannie? What an empty headed wannabee.

I just love it when I get to be right! On style and smooth (slick) eloquence B.O. was in his element, and scored points. On most everything else he was basically clueless

B.O. would have done a lot better if he had sent a folding chair to put on the platform and had an aide drape a freshly pressed, clean, empty suit on it.

Excerpt from Newsmax Saturday, September 27, 2008 2:44 PM
    By: Christopher Ruddy

There is little question that John McCain “won” the first debate last night. Perhaps he lost on points (arguments) and style (how could he beat Mr. Smooth?), but McCain “won” over the audience, the only victory that counts.

Here’s what I saw and heard:

    1. Any question that McCain is too old to run for office has been put to rest. He was sharp, on point and looked good, good enough, that is.

    2. If the debate was held before the elite faculties of Harvard and Columbia, schools Obama attended, he would have won hands down. But this debate was held before the American public.

    3. Obama was too smooth, too smart. Remember the “W. Factor.” Bush lost all the debates with John Kerry on style and substance. But Bush came across as more likeable. Ditto McCain.

    4. Obama has a subtle, condescending speaking style. His hand gestures of constant pointing fingers, frequently raising his fingers to eye level, jabbing constantly, make’s one feel he’s lecturing us. Yes, Kennedy jabbed, but occasionally.

    5. After, the debate I heard on a radio call in person say they listened to the debate on radio. Obama sounded like a professor. Bingo. Americans don’t elect professors president.

McCain did more than hold his own.

And most importantly he demonstrated several things that will resonate with voters.

First, he is ready on day one to be ready Commander in Chief.

Second, he can be trusted. His word is good.

Third, he is one of us.

My second most favorite camera was my Minox-B w/ all of the accessories. I got it while stationed in Germany. Awhile back I dug out some old negs. when I tried to have prints made I was told that everything is automated now and no one is equipped to handle the 6.5×9mm negs. Tough luck.

The Minox was sold years ago [expletive self-deleted] The SuperME is in a drawer awaiting $$$ for a trip to the camera hospital.

But my new Olympus 3.2 Megapixel is giving me 2nd thoughts about repairing the Pentax. Aren’t digitals great!!

From the “Ain’t that just speshul dept”.

Senator Barack Hussein Obama evidently believes in a leveled ‘playing field’. In the interest of ‘fair play’, he proposes to restructure America’s Military to be at parity with Kenya’s Military Forces.Which is somewhat akin to playing a game of football against a team of porcupines while dressed in your birthday suit.

A clip was created by the Obama campaign and posted on YouTube on October 22, 2007, Obama says in no uncertain terms that he plans to unilaterally disarm the nation. In this incredibly telling clip, he pledges to…Cut tens of billions of dollars in defense spending. Cut investments in missile defense systems. Slow our development of future combat systems. And that’s just the beginning. Sounds like just the kind of person you want to be the commander-in-chief of this nation, doesn’t it?
Of course, the Democratic National Committee has finally realized how damaging a video like this could be to the Obama campaign, and, according to World Net Daily, they’re pressuring YouTube to remove the clip.

If it isn’t to late, I hope you help her get that camera. Totally awesome. Takes a little book learning if want to get past point and shoot. I took some great pictures tonight at the car show. I’m hooked!

I went past the point and shoot pretty fast because I want the pictures to take on my personality, not the cameras.

    Fred

The Pentax I am familiar with. It was a good camera in its day but the Minox B-not familiar with that one. Don’t throw away the negatives, there are a few places that work with them or you can call a camera club and find someone with a dark room. I have some negatives of my parents that were taken in the 50’s. I too must find someone to develop them.

I started getting interested in shooting with my little hand held Kodak when I got out of high school. In 1970 I bought my first Nikon, a Nikormat. Great camera, and I thought about buying another on e-bay but that too would have to go to my museum of old relics.

I think film will soon go the route of Polaroid Land Cameras which is a shame. Portraits with a 80 mm lens and 50 speed film will give you a picture I don’t think Digital can match for warmth.

Kodachrome is no longer made and from what I hear when the warehouse is empty, that’s it. How about that Paul Simon. Please don’t take away my Kodachrome.

    MajorDomo

I had one of those Ftn’s with the Naugahyde cover over the body. I loved the later F series but bought my last Nikon, the 8008 series in 1994 with the speedlight flash and a 70 to 300 Sigma zoom. It has been my trusty sidekick since then.

Now the rewind motor is dying and according to the Internet, there is no longer replacement parts. Sadly I will retire it. I did see one on e-bay that looked good and the price was dirt cheap, but we go back to the same problem-no professional film available at the corner drug store.

The Sigma lens may work if I can find an adapter ring to fit it to my Cannon.

Sigh, it is hard to say Cannon. :-(

MsRightWing - We are going to get the camera eventually, but decided that now is not the time for us. She has a real talent for photographing people, and has had to sign forms stating that they are not “professionally done” when getting some developed. A local professional photographer is going to “take her under his wing” and teach her how to do weddings, and other such stuff. She has her little Sony Cybershot with her everywhere she goes, I just want her to enjoy it at whatever level she wants to be at. I haven’t been able to pursue it myself and wish that I had, (it isn’t too late) just never made it a priority.

From the reports I have received there seems to be a bailout bill on paper but not voted on.

The account I saw on Reuters was:

“Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Saturday that the goal was to come up with a final agreement before the Asian markets open Sunday night. “Everybody is waiting for this thing to tip a little bit too far,” he said, so “we may not have another day.”

Hours later, when he and others told reporters of the plan in a post-midnight news conference, Reid referred to the sometimes testy nature of the negotiations.

“We’ve had a lot of pleasant words,” he said, “and some that haven’t always been pleasant.” ”
    ******************************************************
Unpleasant? You mean like no, you can’t incorporate money for building 50 new post offices, 475 new community centers in urban areas and 645 grants to teach urban areas how to sing rap and do the dirty dance?

Just how much junk did the Democrats and Rhinos try to dump into the bill?

I watched the debate and McCain was definitely better. The lamestream media outlets will skew their polls, as usual, and I predict that they will present similar numbers for the debates that are yet to come because they have already decided that Obama “won” them, too.

The man-child looked smallest when McCain talked about a fallen soldiers mother giving him her son’s bracelet, to which the man-child said “I have a bracelet, too” as children are want to do. Trouble was, for Uhh-bama to be able to tell the name of the soldier on his bracelet, he had to look down and read it. It’s so important to him, don’t you know.

Wow! LGF is reporting the family has asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet, but he continues to do so against the family’s wishes.

And in Missouri, the Obama camp wants to eliminate the First Amendment, with the help of law enforcement.

    What nice guy.

I did get to watch part of the debate. All but the last 10 minutes of it. If that 94 year old lady at the care center hadn’t fallen out of her chair and hit her head we would have seen it all. Turned out she too was watching the debate.

The next morning I chatted with a nice lady, life long Democrat, and former mother in law of my mother in law. She did not compare Obama to McCain or to Bush, or to Biden, even Carter. Her standards were not that high. Her Obama yard sign is in the dumpster now because he came off as clueless.

He was just going to tell Russia they can’t do this or that. Didn’t work out well for Jimmy Carter did it? He was just going to “take out” Pakistan when he was against invading Iraq. Iraq remember swore to destroy us, Pakistan may be a reluctant ally but is still an ally with treaty obligations.

When the question came to Georgia McCain gave an accurate in depth answer and defined the situation clearly. Obama looked like and responded with “I agree with Senator McCain because he clearly had not clue what McCain had said and no idea how to counter it. He then tried to redirect it saying in effect that energy independence would remove Russia as a threat. This was a lot like his “air up you tires idea.”

Rosalie thought he looked stupid. He mental image was of Obama in a one on one meeting with any foreign leader, being out of his league and just agreeing with Chavez or Ahmadinejad because he didn’t understand the question and by this agreement from ignorance making long term mistakes. Like Carter did when he surrendered Iran in the first place.

If she thinks Obama lost, and he did manage to turn her unconditional support strait opposition, I can only conclude that Obama is in decline. Senator McCain may not have won, but Obama definitely lost that debate.

Fred, re#27 a commenter over at LGF or MichelleMalkin made a comment that I found amusing, “The suit has no emperor.”
Ms. RW re#30, my Father has literally 100s of negatives from 70 or so years ago, his Mother loved taking snaps of the family. I use a scanner we have at work that can scan negatives and they come out great!

Just received this email from a politically savvy acquaintance who services our company’s copy machines:

This morning from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America’s supply of convenience store managers, and possible candidates for President of the United States.

And if this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next and then Motel 6
    managers.

    It’s getting ugly

    NOW FOR THE REAL NEWS:

The fascist pigs of the “Barack Obama Truth Squad” are trying to get Missouri officials to punish those who say naughty things in political ads about Barack Obama. Of course lying Obama supporters probably won’t be subject to such police state tactics. The chilling KMOV Channel 4 newsclip can be found here.

This is the third time the Obamessiah-Biden ticket has attempted to silence its political opponents through fascist intimidation tactics. This must be the kind of “change” Oblahblah can’t wait to enforce nationwide once he is coronated as POTUS.

Here’s what Missouri Governor Matt Blunt said in response to these fascist attempts by these “Obama Truth Squad” whackos:

St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.

What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.

This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights.

The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them.

The anti-war liberals were right: Under the Bush Administration political dissent will be squelched. Ironically it’s the liberals who are engaged in such fascism by trying to use law enforcement and the power of a state to intimidate and silence those who disagree with Obamessiah and his lying hordes of Obamatons.

You can’t make this stuff up!

Isn’t BO showing signs of great leadership? Threatening people who dare exercise their first amendment rights …
I never thought I would ever say this, but thank God for Bill Clinton, the more he speaks the further he sticks the knife in his own party’s back!
I guess that what you get when you go out and openly smack down Hillary and allow an ill-prepared rookie to take the nomination. Keep it up and there will be a party split, I expect to see a lot of rocks being tossed when Oblunder loses the election. Hide the ashtrays now, or risk catching one between the eyes in a few weeks.

Many Christians, because of their scriptural knowledge and understanding are at least doubtful of the “fact” that BHO is a Christian. Yet there are folks in Missouri that are going to shut them up in the name of “truth”? So these fascist leftists are going to be the ones that determine truth in every political ad? They sure must be zealous for their messiah and for civic duty, eh?

  • 54 mindknumbed kid // Sep 28, 2008 at 4:31 pm

re#48 - I wonder what the mess-I-uhhh would have answered on Georgia if he had been forced to answer first? Maybe the next reporter should querry him on the subject further seeing as he has no idea what he really agreed about.

Debates are mere illusion. Political debates doubly so.

Successful debaters require instinctive knee-jerk reactions. They are solo performers that must be quick (and entertaining) in their responses.
Debaters must have a good selection of sound bits (for news shows) even if they are untrue, impractical, or fundamentally flawed.

What does this tell us about suitability to the world’s most powerful job?

We need a Commander in Chief (like Lincoln). A Republican who was mature enough to draw good ideas from all sides of the political divide and lead for the betterment of AMERICA LLC.

Political debates may at best make ‘good’ television but at worst they will give us the worst political leadership money can buy.

e-mail from Merle - “Amazing! A cartoonist summed up in about 20 words or less the Washington D.C.’s whole kit and kaboodle.”

Cartoon in The Saginaw News, opinion section

Husband and wife are sitting at the breakfast table, reading the newspaper.

Husband: “Sez here they arrested a D.C. Madam for running a house of ill repute.”
    Wife: “They arrested Pelosi?”
