Romney Saw Dad March with MLK, Land on Moon

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 33 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2007-12-21) — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney today continued to defend his statement that he “saw” his father “march with Martin Luther King” as a figurative expression meaning George Romney supported the civil rights movement. The former Massachussetts governor added, “I also saw my Dad step off the ladder of the lunar module to make the first human footprint on the moon.”

Of course, the younger Romney said, “that means Dad was supportive of the Apollo space program.”

“In 1968, I saw my father beat Richard Nixon in a landslide,” he said, “in the sense that he was a better man than Nixon, and in my mind’s eye, I saw him in the Oval Office for eight of the best years in American history.”

The Romney campaign denounced accusations that the candidate had perhaps mistaken his father for Forrest Gump, a mythical character who managed to appear in highly-visible places at pivotal points in U.S. history.

Rival Mike Huckabee, who continues to campaign despite the Hollywood comedy writers’ strike, noted dryly, “I saw George Romney drinking a piña collada at Trader Vic’s. His hair was perfect.”

    Merry Christmas!
    Happy New Year!
    God Bless You!

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.~~John 1:10-14

    Scott~~
Thank you for a great year of consistently thought-provoking and oftentimes hilarious blogging.

Today’s last paragraph is just Too Funny!

I want some of that “Mormon Coffee,” that Mitt has been drinking. It has to be better than our caffeine.

    Postum you say!

And while we’re at it I can “ditto” your #’s 1&2. Additionally I wish to thank you and a bunch of our other fellow Scrapplers for your postings over the last year I appreciate people who can make me think and laugh.

We’ve even had a few pretty funny (silly) Trolls who have also posted. They’re generally good for a well deserved laugh or chuckle. (I think perhaps Ann Coulter’s latest book was about them)

This holiday season, I am thankful that I was not drinking milk, or anything else, while reading this story.

Merry Christmas, Scott, to U and your family.

I wonder if Mitt’s dad “saw” one of the lost tribes of Israel when he stepped off the moonlander?

Romney/Thompson 2008 … and not necessarily in that order.

    Merry Christmas to all!

Scott: May God continue to bless your ministry and multiply your readers. Keep spreading the Gospel!

Loyal Readers-Participants: I read every one of Scott’s ‘articles’, but apologize that I’m not able to join in the posting fun as much as I’d like. Your regular participation in this forum is like walking into a familiar coffee shop every morning. You make it fun and bring ’spice’ to the conversation. Keep it up!

Very funny, Scott! I am taking another look at Mitt, though, since Tancredo endorsed him. I have been an admirer of Tom Tancredo for several years, and if he finds Romney an acceptable candidate, I’m willing to accept that. I wish that Duncan Hunter’s candidacy were stronger…but, I fear that will not happen.

Anyone who hasn’t read Ann Coulter’s most recent column on Huckabee, should check it out. She pretty much nails it on his many weaknesses, the worst of which are his obvious inability to stand up for what he supposedly believes in. For shame…

  • 11 da Bunny // Dec 21, 2007 at 11:11 am

    “is” his obvious inability…

Sorry for my obvious inability to proof before I post! :-(

Scott, you are, as usual, one amazing guy! Channelling Warren Zevon no less, priceless!

Sorry I missed you folks for a bit, Mrs. Boberin’s mom died on Monday so it’s not the merriest of seasons over this way but I still wish all of you the merriest Christmas ever!

Ho, ho and ho (noted attourneys)

[Editor's Note: I'm sorry for your loss. May you and Mrs. Boberin know the comfort that comes from the Christ who can make the season merry even in the midst of pain.]

  • 15 boberinyetagain // Dec 21, 2007 at 4:23 pm

Scott, among your other obvious attributes you are also too kind!
I will pass along your best wishes. The wake is Sunday and these folks do a wake correctly so at least some merriment (perhaps a bunch) should indeed be had! Christmas day might be another matter but still, she was a heck of a lady (in every sense) and she would not be pleased if we were not merry to some degree so that’s the plan.

JL3 Re#13: I’d take Romney over Hillary, but the man who brought gay marriage to Massachusetts — with no legislative or other requirement for him to do so — doesn’t sound “family friendly” to me.

  • 17 JQ // Dec 21, 2007 at 4:53 pm

    Boberin-

I second Scott’s words, and I hope that the wake is, indeed, a time to celebrate her life and to reflect on your own. Just know that you have many friends out here in the Scrapplehood who will be praying for you and yours as you face the emotional Christmas season. May it be filled with your memories of the past and your friends and family of the present.

May the Lord bless you, and may He keep you, and may He give you peace.

Please accept my condolences as well. I hope your Christmas is great anyway! Keep Mom’s memory alive in you and yours and it will be…

I will vote for whoever the RNC choses (or is that whomever?). To do otherwise is to vote for the DNC’s choice. By not voting at all is just another vote the opposition doesn’t have to cover.

Duncan Hunter is my choice but I think it would require direct intervention by God Himself to make that happen. So I shall continue to pray and vote anyway.

    Forrest Romney?!

I too would like to extend my condolences to the Boberin family, do make the wake a celebration of her life, we did that at my father-in-law’s service and although it was a time of sorrow we were able to rejoice in celebrating him and his Savior.

The longer this electioning goes the less I am thrilled with any of the choices. I think I am aligning behind Fred, as Keyes and Hunter will probably be the next ones to follow Tancredo.
Camo says Fred is working hard, I have no doubt about that, but he just isn’t getting much notice, I want some action! I doubt that I can be satisfied, candidates have to dance to the public opinion beat, wouldn’t want to sound too radical.

I remember that if it wasn’t for George Romney George Washington and his soldires including G. Romney never would have won the Revolutionary War. I will forever be thankful for G. Romney because we beat England and now we can speak English. Oops Spanish.

  • 31 Darthmeister // Dec 22, 2007 at 5:46 am

Here’s a nightmare scenario. Ron Paul or some other fringe RINO runs as a third party candidate, thus splitting the Independent/Libertarian/Republican vote and handing the presidential election to the Donk candidate. If that Donk turns out to be another Clinton, then the red flags ought to be waving.

If I’m not mistaken, subsequent studies regarding the Perot/Bush41/Clinton election revealed nearly 70% of those who voted for Perot would have voted for Bush as a second choice. Clinton got only 43% of the vote in 1992. There were theories that were advanced which posited the Clinton political machine encouraged and possibly infiltrated the Perot campaign to do precisely what it did, throw the elections to Bill Clinton.

Conservative libertarians and independents are often a fickle lot who truly do “vote their conscience” as a matter of principle despite knowing the fact they would be handing the election to the likes of some liberal, whacked out Demoncritter. By contrast, hard-core leftists and your garden-variety liberal Demoncrat would quite literally vote for Charles Manson if he was running as a Democrat. Just look at the crooks, pedophiles, perjurers, liars, hucksters and shameless panderers liberal voters are willing to keep re-electing to Congress simply because they have a “D” after their name.
