(2002-11-1) — When American forces hit the ground in Iraq, journalists will be among the vanguard. So, America’s news organizations have been preparing reporters like invasion soldiers.
War Correspondent Boot Camp (WCBC), offered at a secret location in the Dakotas, includes rigorous training in how to wait for the General’s briefings, how to describe aerial footage of bunkers being smart-bombed, and proper protocol for chance meetings with Christiane Amanpour.
Journalists also learn to use GPS devices pre-programmed with the locations of the best bars in Kuwait. Upon graduation from WCBC, each reporter receives a carton of cigarettes, a list of synonyms for the word “explode” and a guidebook called “What To Do When a Republican Guard Battalion Surrenders to You.”
