(2006-10-23) — Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive 2008 Democrat presidential nominee came under attack today from his own party when Democrats in the Senate introduced a bill that would force him to share his abundant charisma with his colleagues.
“Democrats never like to see an uneven distribution of the good things of life,” said one senate aide who helped to write the legislation. “Sen. Obama has more than his fair share of charisma, while so many senate Democrats go without. It’s not right for so much charm and personality to be in the hands of so few.”
Under the terms of the measure, Sen. Obama’s charisma would be redistributed “to each Democrat senator according to his need.”

Just another pretty face from the party of superficiality. When the Tedster can un-corkscrew his tongue around saying the man’s name correctly, maybe Obama will have demonstrated some capability for the office.

I saw a clip that was pretty funny-Obama stammering, gagging, sputtering and choking when Russert poked him in the eye with his flip-flop yesterday. I thought he was going to cry there for a second.
His mouth went as dry as a cottonball in the hot, Texas Sun of August as he thought, “Why, oh, why is this happening to me!?! He’s not being obsequious or even nice like the rest of the dhimmis.”

Here is what Derb at NRO had to say about Obama back in September:
(Sept. 8 broadcast): “Here is the U.S. Senate’s only black member, Barack Obama, on a visit to Kenya. Senator Obama’s Dad came from a village in Kenya, so naturally the Senator has a sentimental attachment to the place. Since Obama Senior actually abandoned the family when Obama Junior was two years old, you’d think the Senator had even more of a sentimental attachment to Kansas, the native place of his mother, who actually went to the trouble of raising him. But hey, this is America, where one black parent entitles you to victim points, even if that parent didn’t stick around very long. You could ask Halle Berry. So… here’s the junior Senator from Illinois, in Kenya, lecturing the Kenyans on the need to crack down on corruption. Let me just say that again: Senator Obama went to Africa bringing a message of clean, honest government with him… all the way from Chicago.”
And here is a totally OT but cool map of empires in the ME over the centuries. What a great visual of history!

Obama’s connection to Africa is tenuous, at best. His father abandoned him and his mother when he was two. He grew up in Hawaii, mostly. He also spent some time in Jakarta as a kid.
His claim to “African” heritage is for effect only.

Egospeak: I read your post under the last thread. Very good. Very good. All I can say is, “Amen.”
I might add, for ET’s benefit, that while he is arguing that sin is a softer version of evil, the explanation under the word “evil” in the Westminster Dictionary of the Bible, copyright 1944, is as follows:
Evil: The origin of evil is a problem which has perplexed speculative minds in all ages and countries. God is not the author of sin, but he permits it. He has permitted it, because the revelation of his infinite perfection is the highest conceivable good and the ultimate end of all his works, and there could be no manifestation of certain of his attributes if sin were not permitted. Were there no misery, there could be no mercy shown by God; and there could be no revelation of his grace and justice, if there were no sin. (Rom 9:22-23) Sin is permitted that God’s justice may be known in its punishment, and his mercy in its forgiveness.
It seems to me that sin and evil are considered interchangeable.

Sin is the result of evil, not vice versa. Therefore, they are distinct from each other and not interchangeable.
40 Darthmeister // Oct 24, 2006 at 6:41 am
JL3rd,
We might be dealing with a bit of semantics regarding the question of sin and evil. As I’ve stated before, sin is any active rebellion or passive indifference to God and His moral law. That covers a lot … well, actually of our rebellion which is the result of our inate sinful condition.
From human experience, I see evil as a subset of sin, more of an active rebellion. From a divine (biblical) point of view, because God is perfectly holy and righteous, He would see both our rebellion and passive indifference as evil. As the Perfect Judge He would consider the fruits of any sin as an “evil” against Him and His moral law.
But I think the common useage of the term “evil” is typically reserved for something extraordinarily dastardly, like the Nazi Holocaust. That’s certainly the predominate human perspective. At the same time, however, Christians must not fall into the trap of making too much of a distinction between evil and sin because often the little sin can become a big evil, and without sin there can be no evil.
I suppose some could legitimately consider sin more of the internal rebellion whereas evil would the external expression of said sin in the form of a deed. Still others would argue that evil exists in the moral vacuum that sin leaves behind. But trying to make too much a distinction between evil and sin can only lead to the wrangling over words. Suffice it to say that God isn’t pleased with either sin or evil.
But neverthink has actually painted himself in a corner because given prior statements of sin and evil, it could easily be argued that whatever happens in Iraq cannot be considered an evil on the part President Bush since his intentions were noble, bringing down Saddam and liberating the Iraqi people. This, of course, is the liberal mantra: “Don’t judge us by the results of our agenda but rather judge us according to our intentions.” But libs try to get around this by falsely claiming Bush went to war for oil or that he “lied” to us … blah, blah, blah.
For neverthink to insist what Bush has done was evil would be hypocritical because that is apparently the same standard of judgment he uses to judge himself and those of like mind - judge us by our intentions, not by unforseen consequences. I mean, if there was ever an evil it would be the liberal welfare state which has created wards of the State and in the process coercing taxpayers like us to fund such an egregious affront to the dignity of man under the pretense of government charity. Now that’s evil just like abortion is an unmitigated evil.
41 JamesonLewis3rd // Oct 24, 2006 at 9:04 am
Evil is a state, a quality, a force. Sin is a deliberate action. Two different things.
I assert the dictionary cited fudged the distinction between evil and sin, and, in fact, never defined evil at all.
I was merely attempting to add clarification to what I thought was a wrong impression given by an insufficient definition. I love semantics, by the way, Biblical or secular.
I don’t try to drag people to the truth, I simply try to point them in the right direction.
Abortion is, no doubt, evil. But it’s not sin until it is performed. You can have evil without sin, but you can’t have sin without evil. Evil does not owe its existence to sin-sin owes its existence to evil.
42 conserve-a-tip // Oct 24, 2006 at 10:09 am
James, I still think that both are interchangeable in a sense, although I can see the point that sin is a subset of evil. You know, “The Devil Made Me Do It” syndrome. And I agree with you that evil is a state of being, however, scripture says that sin is also a state of being: So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
Romans 7:25
I have to agree with Darthmeister, that to quibble over the semantics can lead to an relativist argument regarding sin. I do understand that you are a lover of semantics and want to iron out the differences in words. The fact is, that there is no “amount of sin” or “amount of evil” that is any more or less in scope. Sin is sin and it all falls under the same punishment. Unfortunately, society has tried to assign different weight to different sin, classifying some as evil and some as little white lies. God makes no distinction. Just my thoughts on the matter.
43 Darthmeister // Oct 24, 2006 at 10:58 am
JL3rd,
It might be that we need to recognize that words like sin and evil can be nouns, verbs, predicate nominatives, adjectives and parts of prepositional phrases. In general usuage, however, sin, evil and wickedness are essentially interchangeable. The word “sin” just has more application within English sentence structures.
Examples:
Sin is wrong. (noun)
He sins. (verb)
He is full of sin.
Jesus became sin for us. (predicate nominative)
Abortion is both evil AND sinful … sinful meaning “full of sin”.
