(2006-09-15) — Pope Benedict XVI today apologized for using a quotation in a recent speech that has offended Muslim leaders by implying that the religion of Muhammad has brought little good to the world, and much evil.
Speaking at a German university this week, the Pontiff quoted a Byzantine emperor, who said, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”
However, upon his return to the Vatican a contrite Mr. XVI today said, “I’m sorry if I gave the wrong impression about what Muhammad has done for the world. I was just quoting the old emperor. But upon further reflection, I was reminded of the mighty civilizations that Islam has spawned, and I marveled at their profound contribution to humanity.”
The Pope listed some of the best known predominantly-Muslim nations — Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh.
“Reciting the names of these Muslim lands makes me even more sorry,” he added.
A leading Muslim cleric in Baghdad welcomed the apology as he declared a Fatwa calling for the brutal execution of the 79 year-old Pontiff whom he referred to as “an infidel puppet of the Zionist pig baboons.”

camojack, the Malaysian Prime Minister, himself a Muslim, say’s there is no such thing as a “moderate” Muslim … and he’s absolutely right!
I used to hold out hope there was, but Muslim fundamentalists of every stripe (which describes about 95% of the Islamic world) are not and cannot be “moderate”. This is the dirty little lie even our own government tells us. That’s not to say they are all active terrorists, but the average Muslim certainly has sympathies with the terrorists.
A “moderate” Muslim is a Muslim who doesn’t really understand his/her Koran. Even the Bush Administration has been propping up this sham. I would have hoped “moderate” Muslims would have risen up and proven us wrong by now.

As Christians we ought to build each other up and rejoice in our differences. Each denomination has enough sinfullness to go around. If God can forgive and forget our trespasses, maybe we ought to as well.

I guess many will read my statement and consider me to be anti-Catholic. Well, it is not the first time some folks haves disagreed over my comments.
The Catholic church is as true Catholic church is. History is as history is. Will we look back 40 years from now, if we still tarry on this earth, and say the Methodists and Episcopalians along with liberal sects of the Lutheran churches were wrong for allowing homosexual pastors? I would hope so. I never can change history, nor will I rewrite the past. I can only pray for our Christian spiritual leaders of today.

Now that I’ve read that transcript I would have to say that in this lecture the Pope said, basically, “Can we talk? Can we be reasonable?”
Unfortunately, we see the response and, again unfortunately, it’s not likely to change any time soon.
The rest of the paragraph, immediately following the sentence which has caused mass hysteria in the Muslim world:
“The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. “God”, he says, “is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably is contrary to God’s nature.
