(2005-03-04) — A surge of 262,000 new jobs in January has sparked the biggest slump in the Jobless Leisure Index (JLI) in almost four years, according to Congressional Democrats.
“The Bush economic recovery has taken a savage toll on previously-unemployed Americans,” said one unnamed Senate Democrat. “The average formerly-jobless person has seen an 80 percent decline in leisure hours. That means drastic reductions in television viewing and afternoon napping.”
The burst of new jobs has also caused major financial losses and psychological trauma for politicians who have invested heavily in JLI futures.
