(2002-10-11) — Congress today voted overwhelmingly to authorize President Bush to use force to halt the distribution of the film Swept Away, which features pop singer Madonna.
Democrats and Republicans joined hands across the aisle in support of this measure to “protect the homeland.”
“We speak with one voice,” said Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., “and we’re not waiting for the United Nations on this one. Sometimes, we must act unilaterally.”
The film, a remake directed by Madonna’s British husband Guy Ritchie, spurred Tom Ridge to raise the national terror alert index to orange again.
“From the chatter we’ve heard,” said Mr. Ridge, “This toxin will be released in hundreds of theaters nationwide, upon innocent civilians. It must be stopped.”
